The Endless Struggle (NGUAC 2018)

For NGUAC 2018 Knock-Out round.

Life to me seems to be a great struggle, at times so difficult that it seems impossible to continue fighting. Other times I feel that it is this same struggle that makes life worth living, to show life (God, the universe...) what it is that you are made of, that no matter what life throws at you that you have a fire inside of you and that you will not go out quietly. You will never back down from the endless struggle...

My two main goals for this song were to focus on melodic content and to express emotion. Music has the awesome power of communicating emotion unlike anything else. I'm weak at it, but I'm determined to keep at it and improving. John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Steve Jablonsky are some of my biggest influences right now. Their music is so awesome.

So I recently got Omnisphere 2, Albion One, and Joshua Bell Violin. I didn't realize Albion One and Joshua Bell Violin would use up as much RAM as they do, and my project got to the point where I couldn't work with it anymore because it was extremely slow and even crashed since it was using up so much computer memory. So I wanted to add to and touch up this song more, but my hardware wouldn't let me, unfortunately. I'm gonna have to save up for a new computer. Mine is so old...

This is an Official NGUAC '18 Knockout Round Review

Beginning Comments:

Production / Mixing: The mixing is nice and clean, but the solo violin is quite a bit dry to mesh in the same environment as the rest of the instruments. Everything blended nicely except for those solo violins. They sounded so much closer to the listener. You could have also increased the volume a little bit without introducing any distortion yet, but that's only a minor complaint. Aside from those issues this already sounds mostly like a finished product.

Composition / Structure: The beginning strings had a really neat falling effect. It sets for a nice dark tone. The whole song I could get a sense of storytelling being done here, and since you've made this a "superhero" song, I could see this being used in something like a DC environment where the hero is doing all he can in a hopeless state. In terms of structure, I never felt anything overstayed its welcome, and I liked the development of the main theme. The only thing I notice after listening a couple of times is I would have liked to heard a little more variation with the strings. The constant repetition of the eighth notes I bet would be a bore to the musicians if this were recorded live.

Sound Design: I enjoyed how cinematic it was. The instruments you used were well picked, but a couple of issues I had crept up. Only minor things, like the crash you used I think is a little shallow (even though you tried to hide it). The rolling cymbals were good though. I question the synth you used starting at 0:42. Compared to everything else you have it throws the mood off. It doesn't emphasis the same atmosphere as the rest of the organic instruments you have there. Other than that, everything else sounded great. I especially loved the sounds you used at the end. Those were a nice touch.

Ending Comments: This was a pretty solid attempt. The concepts you have here developed well and allowed a good amount of time to explore your story.

I like what you're trying to do here, but somehow the impact doesn't seem to be getting across. The simple melody that the violin plays throughout most of the track is probably the biggest offender - some variation would have sounded nice, and also more short, stabby notes rather than the long, sustained ones you used would have given this piece more of a punch. The drums aren't bad, but for this really high energy moments (1:53, 3:00) you should have some deep, explosive drums that the listener will feel through their whole body. Beyond all of that, this is a good cinematic piece with a lot of energy, but the biggest drag for me was again having that one violin track carrying the same melody through the whole song.

FateModified responds:

Hi, thanks for the review! I just got the violin VST a couple weeks ago and so I'm still learning how to use it properly to get the best sound. I wasn't too sure myself about how the violin sounded in the first half of the song, but I kind of ran out of time to figure out how to make it better. I just knew I wanted violin in this piece. I'll get better with it in my future songs.

One of the last things I tried to do was to change the legato orchestral notes to short, stabby notes just as you said at certain places, but at that point my project was using way to much RAM and would not play properly and even crashed. So I gave up at that point and went with the last bounce I made from it. It's unfortunate, I'll have to manage my computer memory better when using Albion One and the Joshua Bell Violin VST's since they are memory hogs.

I spent quite a bit of time to get the drums sounding the way they did. My previous attempts were not cutting through the mix when the orchestra was at it's loudest. I also realized that they didn't have as big an impact at the points you mentioned, but again my computer would not cooperate with me at that point due to memory limitations I guess.

Know anyone who might want to buy me a new computer by any chance? Just kidding. I'm gonna have to save for a better one. My current mac is 8 years old, lol.

Thanks again for the review, and I'll definitely keep in mind what you mentioned for my future projects! :)

Mmm, quite tasty

FateModified responds:

Hmm, as tasty as... cinnabons, perhaps? ;)

Great work, sir!

Thank you
