This project was made in July 2018 in FL Studio 12. It's my submission to the 1st Round of the 2018 NGADM. I originally wanted to make a trance-ish track, but after I made the (hip-hop inspired) drums, I decided to put it under "videogame." Spent about 21 hours on it; wish I had more time, but I'm pretty happy with it. Mostly used Sakura and Nexus for the synths, although one of the leads is from Autogun. Drums (as always) are from DrumPad. Spent much longer on post-production than usual; next time I just have to remember to leave enough volume headroom when I'm composing. This contest really motivated me to learn a lot more about certain mixing tools than I knew before, so that's a plus. :) Best of luck to my ADM competitors, @Bassfiddlejones, @Joshgawaldomusic, and @Veneox!

I like the progression and structure, but the bass and more importantly, the drums feel a bit flat. Maybe add a multiband compressor to make the different parts stand out more.

TaintedLogic responds:

Thanks for the tip! I should really learn how to use MBCs properly. I agree that it's time I find some different bass instruments to use too. Cheers!

TL! I enjoyed your track, it gave me a "Stranger Things" soundtrack sort of feel. I think the A/B/A/B sort of progression could have benefit from a nice C section somewhere in there. It was an honor to fight with you in Round 1!

TaintedLogic responds:

Thanks for the kind words, BFJ! I agree about the structuring - I could've done more with it. I'm unfamiliar with the Stranger Things OST, but I imagine the first 15 seconds or so at least fit the mood. XD Thanks again for the review! Good luck in Round 2. ^_^

This piece is extremely relaxing. I agree with all of LSD's comments. I think you improved a lot recently. If this track had a slightly better mix, it would be an instant favorite.

TaintedLogic responds:

Thanks so much! The ADM certainly gave me motivation to improve. :)

The intro is interesting! The piece took a different path than I expected afterwards, but I don't mind that at all. It's a pretty laid back piece, so this is the kind of thing I'd like to listen to when going to sleep, perhaps. I like the transition at the one and two minute marks.

My main gripe with the mix is that the instruments feel a bit centered, whereas the track could be warmer if it had a broader sound. Maybe you can try experimenting with more extreme panning, or some stereo shaping with similar pieces in the future?

The chords and the melodies add to the chill nature of the piece, so I could indeed see this as BGM for a videogame. I like how in the breakdown-sections after the transitions I mentioned, the mood shifts a bit. As I'm sure you know, I tend to like some ambiguity in music :p

I actually liked this track more on the second listen than on the first, for some reason. There was a day in between, so my mood might just be a bit different! I like the ending of the piece :)

TaintedLogic responds:

Thanks so much for the review, LSD! Interesting is the right word for the intro, indeed. XD I almost wanted people to think "oh, he's making another creepy ambient track" before I turn it into a blissful VGM piece. :) Thanks for the feedback on the mix. I do have stereo widening on some instruments, but maybe I didn't do it enough since I'm easily turned off by too-wide mixes myself. Thanks again for the review! Gl in the ADM. ^_^
