2018 will commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Terry Riley's In C's premiere. A celebratory concert will be held in the town where I live. The local orchestra, however, can not count on the generous and persistent funding common to other large musical groups in the world. The lack of proper structure has impeded them to perform the famous piece. Hence, they have hired me (in what constitutes a dubiously offensive compliment).

Flightless Bird employs the same technique found in Riley's In C. Themes are played successively through the voices. In Riley's the interest of the piece resided in the strength of each motif. Here, if any strength is indeed present (the existence of which I doubt), it ought to be credited to something else.

In this piece, the relations between themes are treated canonically. Such treatment is an addition to the technique found in the original piece this work tributes.
