This is a quick piece I threw together in the last two days. I've been really trying to get better at mixing over these last few weeks and haven't been able to do as much composing. This is the first thing I was able to compose after waiting so long. Hopefully some of my new mixing skills came in handy!

I like the sharp strings at the beginning and the energy of the piece. Good sense of climax and apprehension during the first 30 seconds or so. The sweep at :48 felt a little out-of-place here given the orchestral instrumentation. The melodic content here is beautiful, though, especially at 1:14. I think the percussion and strings are struggling to come through the mix during the busier sections of this piece. Perhaps some more equalizing and compression would help. The bass slide at 1:45 is a little cheesy, but overall this is a well-structured, smooth-flowing, and grippingly dramatic piece. It is a bit short, but there’s enough phrasing and dynamic changes to constitute a relatively complex structure here. Nice work! :D

Beautiful piece. Very true to the nature of our genre.

How is this only a 4 star rating? This is awesome! I really like the percussion you have going there. This piece has so much potential. My only critique is that the bass could maybe use a little boost. Not a lot, just a little. Maybe try some Col Legno mixed with the bass spiccato to add to some impact to your hits. It might not work, but it's something to try.

CloakedSoup responds:

Thank you! Maybe it's because I listen to more classical music, but I've always been hesitant to boost the bass too much haha. I think this kind of music definitely calls for it though! I'm starting to get more into writing this kind of 'commercial' music (versus modern music written for a concert hall) and also learning how to properly mix it to sound like more modern Hollywood/trailer/film music. I'm not too worried about the composition side of things, but critiques like this help me to get my mixes to sound cleaner as I move forward, so thank you again!
