Paper thin

Hello all, this is my last and Major project of today. this is a sixty plus track monstrosity of a multitrack project called "Paper thin", this is the first mix down and as a rough copy the mix doesn't sound that bad. Sounds alright on my systems anyway mainly my Dance orientated studio monitors. There is a fully mastered version on Soundcloud, but because I ran out of free downloads with LANDR, I can't unfortunately post it here (maybe next month, unless something better take its place). This was nearly completely played in semi live a 1988 vintage Yamaha keyboard (not the best keyboard in the world, but it has nice retro sounding strings on there!)

Parts of this track were multi tracked onto the Tascam multitrack recorder (DP-02), Some samples were run into the A3000 for further processing (mainly the drums, which were also sampled from the PSS-790 keyboard). They were then fired off live using the Akai MPC over MIDI to couple with the Yamaha A3000 sampler. I used a Boss DS-1 distortion on the lead synth brass from the keyboard and I compressed it with my Joe Meek valve compressor. There were parts of the Rhythm section of a clean guitar setting which were run through a spilt path one through a hammond spring reverb the other went to a Boss TR-2 Tremolo pedal for good effect. I did use the Dune 2 VSTi in Cubase, to add a arpeggiated synth backing which ran back out into the A3000 and recorded it through a Derived Korg MS-20 filter driver (Home brew). The whole track has been run through the Joe Meek Valve compressor to pick up some extra warmth, without any added distortion like you get Datube in Cubase anyway I thought I would try to get the effect from a much better analogue signal.

I also used Waves mastering effects and then I went in a experimental direction, and added in a heavyily EQ'ed Kick from one of my personal D&B collections, The EQ was a behriger valve EQ (I know they don't have the best reputation, but I've had mine for the last decade and its been pretty good (mind you I've upgraded the valves for russian valves which were much better than jokes they came with...). I also added in Rob Papen's Subboombass at the end of the mix and between mastering phases, so this has a really good bass repsonse on this version, which I will say the LANDR, mastering kind of flattened the signal out and bass response afterwards wasn't quite as I had hoped, but mind you the overall soudn is much better. So if you have a chance check out the LANDR version and if you do tell me what you think? https://soundcloud.com/exedistmusic/paper-thin-bass-mix-1-for

I mainly used Cubase 8 Elements on my studio laptop for this project, as the PC is not available for a few days...

I really like the track and I do agree that it sounds much better on Soundcloud. I do think ir can get a little busy at times, but the overall mix sounds good. this is more of a rock track then a EDM or electro track, but I can hear the EDM components. I can tell from your description of how you went overboard on your outboard was a little over the top, especially on open processing and maybe next just produce something like this inside Cubase and maybe record more layers in time you save....Just a thought mind, unfortunately this version genuinely does suck compared to your LANDR processed one on Soundcloud, which is much louder, in your face, you can actually feel the warmth from your over usage of your owned valve technology (which really is a big shame this version because I do think it could gone down much better (not saying that you ain't done well..) and got more views?

good stuff
