Easy Listening - Solo Instrument

Author Comments

A few days ago I tried to recreate one of the melodies from an anime song and then I found this key, which I believe is C sharp minor. I really liked it so I decided to use it for my next song. I made part B first, which is extremely catchy, and then I made part A, intentionally leaving out the dominant chord because I thought that it would create an interesting effect.
Even though the song only has four instruments as well as a lot of repetition, it was difficult to make. There are hundreds of notes in the song, and I changed the velocity of each note at least twice. I wanted the piano to sound at least somewhat realistic. The violin soundfont was difficult to work with because it sounded fake in its original form. After adding reverb, delay, and a sliding effect on some notes, it sounded much more realistic.
The mixing wasn't difficult, but it took a long time, especially because of the flute. In the current mix, the "bass" and violin are panned slightly to the left and the piano, bell, and flute slightly to the right. There is also a hidden choir pad that's centered. I'm not sure why I added the bell, but I can easily remove it if someone doesn't like it.

I didn't know how to end the song so I decided to just use one final chord. I didn't want to end the song on the root chord because it would sound too satisfying so I chose the current one.

Usually when I complete a song, there is usually a major flaw that annoys me, but this time, I feel content. I know there are flaws and the composition is simple, but I can enjoy the entire song without thinking about my mistakes or shortcomings.

Thank you for listening. If you enjoyed this song, you can also listen to a similar song I made called "Regret".

The rain and thunder sound effects are from:

update 11/5 I improved the mixing and exported the song in a much higher quality. The piano now sounds like the dominant instrument instead of the violin. I also made a slight change to the ending. If you don't hear the new changes. try clearing your cache.

update 12/21 I added a lot more details and made the piano sound more realistic.

Update 1/17/16 I improved the mix, again, and changed some note velocities. I also changed the ending note because to give the ending a sense of uneasiness.

Sounds very BlazingDragon-ish. ;) The problem I can hear with this is that it doesn't go into anything else. It kinda stays on the same path throughout the song. I'm digging the mix. A proper amount of reverb. The piano used I feel could be changed to something with a little more...clarity, I suppose. I'm very glad you decided to not end the song with a root chord (as you said). It always comes off too cheesy, so good on you with that.

BlueOceans responds:

I should listen to his music soon; I will probably like it if it's similar to this song. I agree with your criticism, but I didn't want to make this song too complex because I love the melodies and I didn't want to detract from them. If I make another piano song in the future, it will probably be more complex. I'm glad the mix is good because I was worried about that. I assume the use of panning is good as well. Thank you for the review!

Woah, you've made a lot of tracks since my last binge-review session. I like the strings and piano combo. The emotion is great, and the rain/thunder sound effects complement those harmonies well. It's beautiful, if a little structurally flat. I would've liked to see you do more to distinguish between the various sections of the piece, and some dynamic contrast and phrasing couldn't hurt either. You might need some sort of breakdown section or bridge as well. Still, I think your samples are really good, and the ending was fitting (even though the track cut off a little suddenly). This is one of your better tracks IMO. Keep up the great work, BO! ^_^

BlueOceans responds:

I actually have 2 more tracks that I'm going to upload next week :D

The structure is supposed to be that of a pop song: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, outro. The bridge is the part that has no violin or flute. I agree that I could have done more with the song's structure and I did consider it, but I loved the chorus' melody so much that I thought repeating it would be a good idea.

The samples weren't good, but FL Studio's note sliding feature helped a lot.

This is my favorite song that I made. Thank you for the review!

Gotta agree with you man,

I definitely enjoyed the piano solo piece way more than this one, but it's still nice, the strings are not quite in tune for my taste... Idk what is it.

Maybe revisit this project again in the future, I think its got quite a lot of potential ;)

Keep it up!

BlueOceans responds:

I agree with you. I intended for the strings to enhance the piano melodies, but it seems that the opposite occurred. I might revisit this project in the future when I have a better understanding of how to play piano.

Thanks for the second review!

I love it and it definitely sounds like an anime ost. Excellent work. I too am trying to make something that would fit an anime, but mine isn't even remotely polished. What program did you use to make this?
I like the violin best. Everything sounds soft and atomospheric, and serious. Good Game. 5/5 stars

BlueOceans responds:

I used fl studio. I don't know if it's the best program but the piano roll is very easy to use.

Thanks for the review

This has a really good atmosphere to it! It makes me feel like I'm ballroom dancing with my S/O alone during a stormy night. Rose pedals all over the hardwood floors. Very romantic sounding and overall beautiful in my ears.
