A famous piece of Maurice Ravel which I copied and sequenced.

Pretty good.

All in all the sounds are fairly realistic and you use dynamics fairly well. The biggest problem with this arrangement tends to be articulations. Many instruments attack with a "mwah" kind of attack and there could be more legato passages in general.

As an aside, this is one of my least favorite Ravel pieces. He was a fantastic composer and great orchestrater. Try some passages from Daphnis et Cloe for more practice.

sinequanon responds:

this is a strange piece compared to his general oeuvre, isn't it? unfortunately I worked GPO to the max here (within reasonable non-computer-busting limits) and couldn't work around the various sample quirks. i'm happy to hear, if i'm not mistaken, that you're also a GPO user so you'd be familiar with that experience.

that said i wouldn't dare touch Daphnis et Chloe with a computer, it would be diminished by sequencing in inverse proportion to its greatness.

Ravel! Yay!!

I love Ravel and I love this piece! However, I thought the sounds were kinda meh and not very alive. It made it sound like what Ravel would call a "Dead Pavane for a Princess" rather than a Pavane for a Dead Princess. But it works for the most part. Good job!

sinequanon responds:

thanks, not sure what kind of magic you expect from these samples though. the strings especially are generally weak when exposed. nice ravel quote.
