I put off writing a song for the Newgrounds Underdog Audio Competition until the last minute, so I decided to make a boss theme for the demon that makes you put things off until the last minute.

I like the rhythmic content and bouncy synths. The bass has a bit too much reverb on it imo - that’s probably contributing to what is a pretty distorted mix here. The foreboding mood and energy of this piece are great, although the drums could’ve been a bit more punchy. The piece is smooth-flowing and has a decent amount of variety. I especially like the multiple sections that have dense harmonies with distinct patterns of emphasis. The tempo automation at the end was also a nice touch. Overall, the mixing is my main concern here. You might have to do more to pull apart the frequencies from the different instruments here - none of the instruments except for the bass and kick should have any frequencies below 200 Hz, and the pads/arpeggios could probably use some stereo widening or maybe just a tighter equalizer range to give the bass and main melodies some more room. Still, the composition is really fun and dynamic here. Love the instrumentation, too. Keep it up, JorelSimpson! Thanks for coming out to the NGUAC. ^_^

I agree with ethereal winds. It feels as if there is some phase cancellation going on due to the wideness of this track. Like, the drum kit, the bass, and all rhythm elements are widened out. As such it's a little disorienting! I definitely recommend not doing that, so much so that I'm shocked the mix sounds as balanced as it does in this state!

Writing is great, by the way.

ha, the title and concept of this track tickles me. It's a shame I didn't hear it sooner; perhaps it could have helped ward off my procrastination demon. This is really nice! If I can leave a bit of advice, and this is just my personal opinion... While I do enjoy a wide mix, I think it would be a bit even more balanced if you didn't neglect the centre of the track. Perhaps the bass and percussion would hit harder if they didn't feel so wide in the mix, but if you left the other more melodic elements widened instead. Aside from that, all of the musical elements in this track are super impressive and I REALLY liked the subtle speed-up around the climax. You succeeded in driving up the intensity. This is a really great track! Good luck in the finals :)

JorelSimpson responds:

Thanks for the criticism. Good luck to you as well.
