The song began with the bassline, which is how quite a few of my projects started, and I built around that. For most of its life cycle, the song was intended to be a straight-forward heavy metal song, but when revising the area around the second chorus, I wanted to bridge the gap in a more gentle way. This was initially done just with the pad synths but later expanded further with the piano and relaxed drums.
I am admittedly bad at naming projects, especially when they are as basic as this. I've read in a couple of places that one technique is to name a project after a mental image, so I tried it with this song. As weird as it was, the song, especially with the context of the gentle ending, made me think of the burned ruins of an abandoned structure, but I struggled to find a title that could convey that specific context without being absurdly long. Then I settled on Ashes as the name.
