This is my entry for the Knock-Out round of the 2022 NGUAC. I started with the chord progression and the melody which I wrote on the piano. My music theory knowledge isn't actually sufficient to fully explain why it works, but it's Cmaj7 - Am7b5 - Bm7 - Bdim7 - Em7 - Fm7 - Dmin7 - G7, in the key of C major. Well, I know that the last 2 chords are a typical ii-V (-I if you count the first chord of the next repetition) but that's all I know.

I actually cheated with the 8bit part because the square wave plays 4 notes at the same time even though that wouldn't be possible on an 8bit sound chip but I don't care. I even put some filters on the sounds which also wouldn't be possible.

The brass sample you hear in some parts of the song was made by me so no copyright issues or rule breaks there. It uses 2 trumpets and a trombone from Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra. The xylophone and the piano in the bridge is also from those samples but the offbeat piano chords are recorded. All the synths and the 8bit stuff are either made with surge, vital or ZynAddSubfx

The bridge (I will just call it that) and the outro use a different progression which abuses the minor subdominant even though we have a major key. it has a very special melancholic sound. The arrangement here is very simple but i think it really lets the harmony speak for itself that way.

The weakest part are probably the drums. I used a very unimaginative four-on-the-flour beat because it fit really well with the piano and bass. I don't usually us this kind of beat but when I do, i never manage to glue the kick and the clap together like i always hear it in electrohouse tracks. I don't know how to do that. Other than that there is not much to say about the drums.

I hope you'll enjoy.

Also I finally found a name for the song after writing these paragraphs.

I like the cutesy synths and jazzy harmonies at the beginning. The treble tones in the lead synths might be a bit too prominent for my tastes, but the production is clean and loud otherwise. The melodies are nice, and you keep the texture interesting with the rhythmic elements and sound design changes. I like the more mellow breakdown at 1:07 too with the more orchestral sound design. The progression is also really nice here - smooth transitions at 1:09 and 1:35 help channel the energy well. At times, the drums might’ve used a bit of a boost in the mix, and I wanted to see you vary the melodies a bit more later on, but the dreamy 8-bit section at the end was a nice change-of-pace that helped bring the piece full-circle. Overall, this is a really enjoyable piece, 314leafcutterant! Keep it up. ^_^

Interesting piece, with a lot of space and verb. I have no complaints about writing, instrumentation, or pacing. Transitions are very nicely done.

My sole gripe is how little center channel I hear. Most everything sounds as if it's been spreadilated, and the 20k and above in the mix is quite up there for each instrument, but especially your hats. Nothing melodic ever reaches those heights, so it's a little jarring to hear a hihat and reverb tails almost as loud as the melody.

There's a bit of boxiness to the overall sound. I recommend cutting 250 hz and below on all of your reverbs (to taste of course) and centering your bass at these frequencies. There are plugins to make this happen. I just forget their names.

The sine bass is somehow a bit loud and also nearly inaudible at the same time. I think that's just characteristic sine waves. I recommend pulse, saw, square, and ramp over sine -- sine waves take up a lot of room in the mix to be heard and are best as a sub bass underneath another bass, imo.

Other than that, really enjoyed the piece and think you did a wonderful job arranging. Thanks for coming out to NGUAC! (again)

I really loved the outro <3.
