Sobriety (ver. II)

Everyone, I present to you Sobriety, in its full crowning glory. Mixing is not final, but I will sort that out once I get live takes done for all the FLPs related to it. I penned this version in a single night as part of my ongoing Lenten Composition Challenge.

When I wrote it I was struggling to write something. 7 is a sacred number in a number of Abrahamic faiths and it is the character theme of a priest, so it made sense for me to write in 7/4 time. HOWEVER: I was making a mistake that I don't think I'd ever want to make again. I was writing for the sake of writing a 7/4 piece. The resulting piece felt choppy and stiff and it was an exercise in keeping my own sobriety. I contented myself with the older versions for a long while, thinking that I couldn't expand upon them further; this was compounded by the fact that I was mouse-clicking all the notes.

But here, now that I am able to play these parts live on a keyboard, I can concentrate a lot less on the form, and much more on the emotional quality of what I'm trying to deliver. I finally gave it a melody, the thing that it had been missing for so long -- the thing that gave this piece form and meaning. I wanted it to represent the absolute pain that we'd feel from having gone down a path of evil, bigotry, or vain pride, the pain we feel on understanding that we need to change our ways. The character for whom this theme was written goes through that sort of pain too, so it just clicked. It made sense.

EDIT 12.03.2022: My word, that's four for four this year. :O Thank you so much for the FP.

Yea, i like this. I can see you noted this isn't your final mix. I would believe with your experience that your final mix down will be brilliant. As it is it's quite central with a muddy mid. Obviously width and eq will resolve that :) Composition wise it's great, well suited to a game or film as bgm in a key scene. All your instrument choices are correct for the genre. Though there's just 'something' a tiny bit off, synthy, but i get it, finding and utilizing top end vsts just cripples us. I'm undecided on the glassy/glockenspiel tone, the playing is not the issue, it's the tone, I don't really know what I would change it for, maybe something from the pluck/hammer section of north africa or india.....not a clue.

Really enjoyed the piece though, it builds perfectly and has loads of emotion, it loops well. Can't wait for your find mix. This has potential to work across multiple formats.

Addiction sucks, I know those ones. Its a beautiful song
