[NEW ALBUM NO BOUNDARIES ON BANDCAMP]

Quick link to the namesake sample, MilkyPossum Newgrounds Podcast interview, sample appears towards the very end. I really need to chop another episode of that show but I got some awesome Jazz stems from Mihai Sorohan and that is 100% my next project I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS. I WILL NOT FINISH THOSE RSN LOOPS. I RUINED THEM LOL.

I'm taking a brave step today and labeling this "dubstep." I try not to tag dubstep often because the genre has a way of attracting young ego. I got a two star review recently and kind of laughed about it. Apparently my track was not real dubstep because "the song does not have the drop...this dubstep is simple and lazy."

Child, hold up. Not all dubstep is going to sound like Excision or Skrillex. Shit can be hella lazy, dance music in general is repetitive as fuck. It's an EDM staple for DJ playability. Even when songs break from a typical structure it will still adhere to things like patterns that change every 16 bars. You can write some shit in 7/8 at 500 BPM but no one will pick it up for their DJ set. Let's talk about drops, "the drop" in dubstep is the point of the track where the first chorus begins, or where a traditional DJ "drops" the record needle apparently. It's the first climax in an EDM track. It's where the wub wubs start wubbin and the meat of the song exists. Personally, if I were to drop a needle I'd drop it somewhere before the drop to get some of the atmosphere and pads beat matched to a previous song for a nicer mix.

I often fuse genres like dnb, jazz, funk, future, hiphop, rock, IDM, classical, and so on. Kids today are making up genres like "color bass" and "chip step." It just so happens that making up new genres is also a staple of EDM. Every few years new catch phrases arise and some of them stick around long enough to become sub genres of already established genres. It is a way of life. What this means is that not all dubstep is going to sound like stereotypical "clubstep." Variety is spice.

I know it must seem like this kid's review got to me but I admitted to laughing about it because I too used to be an angsty kid. Over the years I've signed tracks away to dubstep labels, and have probably been writing dubstep since before this kid was born (assuming he is 12). My college thesis in 2011 began to form here on Newgrounds a little earlier. Over a decade ago a user who now goes by the name SCJ got a bunch of us audio regs to start producing dubstep in atypical time signatures as an experiment. I happened to like the idea a lot and continued to produce all sorts of EDM in whatever time signatures I felt like. This became the focus of my thesis work, so thank you William Burns, wherever your body may be.

Sorry I don't write "real" dubstep. Kids these days man ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Quarl responds:

Lol, thank you shatten. Your words are always a positive influence and I'm grateful :)

Super nice, it feels like "the ghost inside the radio is glitching the transmition again, but im still vibing because it sounds nice"

Quarl responds:

Lol, thank you for vibing <3

So what you're saying is
... this is a diss track?

Quarl responds:

I definitely went overboard sharing my feelings. I need to not feel things :'(

Yo, this song is very cool, relaxing and beautiful, the strings, the piano, everything in this song is perfect.

Quarl responds:

Thank you love, I appreciate this. Happy to see you stop by Kronos :3

I mean it’s cool but I prefer the crazier type of dubstep better

Quarl responds:

Preference is neat but I prefer open mindedness that leads to a layered understanding of music.
