Having spent all the first half of my final year learning After Effects so I could create She Farted…, I was preparing to fail my university course by just making a bunch of demos instead of doing course work. I just wanted to make some music that was a bit more positive than what will be outcome of my course!
SFACTW wasn't very well received by lecturers. Some of the main lecturers marking my work couldn't understand how I spent so much time on such a short piece of animation (with a generic storyline), as they were comparing animation to people on the course doing logo designs or illustration. A few lecturers had to remind them that this actually hits on the illustration side of things, and that I needed to put a brief together, but no matter how I worded it or fleshed it out, it would never make a grade…
… That was until I left uni and the film was picked up in two film festivals. One of the festivals would show my short film (along with 11 others) in cinemas, before films, in theatres up and down the country. I was absolutely blown away by the response it had at this point and I think it prompted uni to change their grade and I ended up passing my course eventually.
This was the last song I had time to finish before knuckling down in the lead up to finishing university, and I can hear that I wasn't letting any of it get on top of me and was biding my time and being mindful of the best direction to take.
