COMMENTARY — I was going through my old music collection on SoundCloud and found this. I searched through my oldest hard drive and found the original project file and did a few slight changes. The original 2014 version had an "audible watermark" sound of a text-to-speech man saying "Music by Alexander Emenheiser". I was against putting this in, but my dad insisted that I make my music "art theft-proof". Besides removing that, I EQ'd a cymbal crash and adjusted the compression to be a little less harsh. Everything else is the same.
The drum at the beginning was a tongue drum or more likely a singing bowl. They're used in meditation to calm you and as a reference note when chanting "Om". My dad had me big into meditation back then and I wanted to include it in some of my music. I did a MadTracker cover of "om mani padme hum" before this song. If I can find it, I'll post it for funsies.
The project file was titled "Delicately FOR THAT NOAH GUY". My guess is that this song was meant for an old acquaintance of mine from high school named Noah Flaharty. He was the drummer for the school jazz band with Mr. Walls. He was a very good drummer, too! He continues to make music today and is in his own band. (Mr. Walls went on to become a lawyer.) I think this song was planned to be a collaboration of some kind between us two because there was another song related to Noah from around the same time. I think it was a challenge to see who could make the better Tetris cover. Noah's artist handle was Avary at the time.
This poem below is presumably the intended lyrics to the song. I never sang and recorded them because I was (and still am) very self-conscious about my singing voice. At the time, I was well into my political and spiritual art phase and am now embarrassed by it. The music itself is nice, although it's too chaotic for my tastes now. I really wanted to combine progressive rock and electronic music because I thought it was super cool. It still is super cool, but I've changed my focus to making catchy melodies and easily loop-able songs instead of being musically progressive.
If we give this prosperous land
To those who deem it “new and grand”,
They’ll pillage and steal it all for themselves
And we’ll end up a memory on their bookshelves
Human greed is interesting indeed.
Take it from me,
Live by love and you’ll agree:
Some things are meant to be taken delicately.
Each must be taken individually
If we want to live with one another in peace.
What will we think in days to come?
What will we think in years to come?
Please, don’t even try
I just want to live my life
We know what we’re doing in this “endless strife”
(Ah, oh)
Human greed is interesting indeed
What will we think in days to come, years to come?
What have we learned in days and years gone by?
What will we think in days to come, years to come?
What have we learned in days and years gone by?
