Sometimes the most simple tracks take a lot of mixing. This instrument is really amazing when you hear it in real life, but for some reason once you record it, get it in the computer, it's dull, thin, lifeless and hard to sit in a mix. It can be particularly hard to mix when it's on it's own. It can take a good bit of mixing/production to get it back to being as rich sounding as real life, without being harsh or spiky. Still not happy with the stereo balance and I'm not sure the low bass is right yet, but I'll mess with that stuff another time. Hope you enjoy, if you like this sort of thing anyway.

oh hell yes! take me to zen town. love that bass, what is it? it drives all the low range, need good speakers to appreciate that. which i am on lol.

A bit sparse, and there's some high end hiss off the kalimba, notch filter will sort that.

lovely, melodic and tranquil. That bass is epic. I'm always intrigued about how one can develop this into a trip hop/breaks verb'd track.

Midnights-Ocean responds:

Hey thanks man! This is literally a single instrument track. Only added thing is a little airy hissy sounding pad that comes in just every once in a while to add atmosphere.

Unfortunately, it was raining out when I recorded the kalimba, so the noise floor was not great but after you pointed it out, I hunted down a good plugin. The bertom denoiser. Seemed to fix it. Which is nice, since I really don't want to do a retake. You know how that is, that first take always has something magic that you miss with a retake. At least that's how it usually is with me. When I do another one like this though, next time I will try harder to get the noise floor down. It is nice though to know I have a tool to fix such things now. The denoiser I had before I found bertom was crap. The bertom is actually pretty good. It's basically a mulitband gait with spectrum and sensitivity controls.

The mid bass is directly from the kalimba. The low bass sounds that you likely wont hear unless you are on good big speakers (or phones) is actually what happened when I automated the audio thing reels tape delay plugin to stop and start the reel every so often. Very cool effect and I'm glad someone noticed it.

Yes this is sparse. Plenty of room for additions. Not sure if I will add much though, since the point of this was simplicity and I love how well the kalimba did on it's own with the thick tape delay. If you wanted to add beats though (or whatever), go ahead and download it and post what you come up with. I'd be happy to listen. Thanks again for the review. Glad you liked.
