AIM - Stomach of The Beast

Considering how this contest works, I can submit two works, so I decided "why not?" and made another piece. Even though it did say that soundscapes aren't really the way to go about this challenge, I still decided to make a track that's 50/50 an ambient track and a proper electronic one.

This submission has been inspired by this artwork:

Funnily enough, it was more of a chain reaction of inspiration that started off with this art.

It reminded me of a dream I had not so long ago about how I saw footage of a giant whale swallowing a horde of penguins. After this, the camera switched to a view of inside the stomach of said whale, and there you could see that horde of penguins getting attacked by rotten, zombified penguins. Those zombified ones had completely see-through hollow stomachs and rotten spilling bowels just gushing out of them. It was like watching an insanely gross, weird and disturbing documentary, especially considering how realistic all of this looked. Honestly speaking, I almost vomitted when I woke up.

Because of that dream I remembered the level theme of Corpse in Binding Of Isaac: Repentance, and then it kind of spiraled into me making this track while under the influence of all of this.

This piece is full of sounds that captivate me in a rather unsettling way. It's almost hypnotic - I'm drawn into the soundscape even though the atmosphere doesn't exactly call for a pleasant experience. The strengths of this piece rely on evoking this nightmarish fever dream that slowly, but surely pulls me in.

I really thought everything came together when the distorted bass entered at around 1:10. It's so overwhelming that it practically engulfs the other instruments, but it felt like a good step in the progression of this repeating idea and added some much needed emphasis on certain notes in its rhythms.

Also of note is the conclusion, which feels subtly emotional and human-like, with the way those synth chords first enter at 2:33. The major 7th chords heighten the sense of melancholic resolution and I feel like they reflect the humanness of the inspired artwork in the same subtle manner. I like how this accompanies the return of the ideas from the introduction, sort of an interesting recontextualization of what started as a dark and disturbing atmosphere.

Overall, this piece does a great job at encapsulating the subject of the artwork in all its breathtaking glory. I think you got the tone just right.

WakerLink responds:

That is quite a detailed and interesting interpretation of the piece, and I'm more than glad that you enjoyed it. Thanks for hosting this contest, it was pretty fun!

For both submissions you have a really good sense for atmosphere. Delicious pieces to dive into. I with the 808 bass was more layered since it's a little dry on its own.

WakerLink responds:

glad you enjoyed the tracks, and yeah, the 808 bass could be a bit more interesting, still not very good at making synth 808 patches so this bass is a bit basic

Oh holy hell, this is incredible, I'm so glad I was able to inspire something this cool! 11/10 for understanding the assignment, nightmare imagery and disgust are my favorite topics to explore when doing horror art!

Claps can be louder.

The 808 has too many notes for that portamento effect you have on it I think

WakerLink responds:

yeah, went a little bit overboard with the amount of 808 notes, I don't know why but I go overboard with them a lot of the time, thanks for the feedback

Nice
