Vermillion · Pixel Art Portrait

Share

An anime styled Dungeon and Dragons character I drew some time ago.

I decided to turn her portrait into pixel art, and that idea eventually became various versions of the portrait following different systems limitations or testing different color palettes.

The NES / FAMICOM, Game Boy and PICO-8 versions follow each system’s limitations and restrictions, and could be easily replicated in a game that runs on the real thing. DB16 and DB32 only use the colors avaible in Dawnbringer’s DB16 and DB32 palettes respectively.

I’ll upload a full body version of this character’s art later, and I eventually would love to do more of these portraits for various characters from different campaigns I have been a part of.

bro, this deserves to be next to the Mona Lisa. it may not seem hard to do. but I just know that could have taken weeks or months. or maybe a few days... kinda like how it is making my music it looks like it took a long time. but it didnt

VampireDev responds:

Thank you so much!
I honestly can't remember how long it took to make, but it definitely was more than one day!
But yeah, the more you practice the faster you become at it!

Nicely done! Good work with all the variants as well.

VampireDev responds:

Thank You!

I love how much detailed is the pixel art!
Also, I think that the DB16 one is the prettiest, I find the colors delicate and harmonious together.
I hope that one day I become as good as you! (And I also hope to write in English better, I'm really sorry if there are some grammatical errors)

VampireDev responds:

Thank you!
DB16 ended being one of my favorites too, it really gives the portrait a nice soft and delicate look doen't it? You definitely will! Just keep practicing!

I like her design, and the different versions are really cool. It kind of looks like it's from one game remade over and over.

One thing that would be interesting to consider is the memory requirements of each one. Like sure, you matched the color pallet of the NES, but would that take up the whole cartridge? That might be a fun challenge to work around (or it might be a pain in the ass, lol).

VampireDev responds:

Thank You! I had never thought about it as a game getting remade over and over, but now that you mention it I can't stop thinking about it!

Regarding the system's memory, while still a little big, the portrait doesn't use a huge amount of space either, meaning it would worlk properly as a simple screen in a game. Maybe something like a "Character's profile" screen or a dialog cutscene.
Putting these protratis into the real hardware would be a really interesting project.

very well made

VampireDev responds:

Thank You!
