Bimmy

Hastily put my feelings onto the page for this drawing. It's of a baby squirrel I noticed while on a walk today. I saw him all alone on the ground. I'm assuming he fell out of his nest in the tree he was under. I walked over and pet him and picked about 8 fire ants off of him. He looked so lonely and helpless, so I put him in my hand and carried him home. He fell right to sleep, he must have been so tired. God, he was adorable. It was too late to really do anything to save his life, though. But I still feel in my gut that something could have been done... I'm not sure if that's just desperation talking, though.

Down to my core, I feel like I let him down. I took him into my care and he still didn't make it...

At least he was loved. He was very loved. For the few hours I knew him, I swear I loved him like he was my child. A not insignificant part of me was looking forward to being his parent. I'm really sorry I couldn't have done more, Bimmy. I'm so sorry, buddy... His tail wasn't even fluffy yet for christ's sake. He never got a fair chance, man. I think that's what hurts the most... I know stuff like this happens in nature all the time, call me a baby all you want, but it's different when you actually see it happen.

After cooling off a little, I guess since there was little to nothing that could have been done to save his life anyways, then I'm glad I took that walk. I'm glad I was there to give that little guy some shelter, warmth, and cuddles before he died. He damn well deserved that at the very least. Goodbye Bimmy, I love you, you fuzzy little thing.

Something similar happened to me once. We found a little guy on one of our walks and even though he could barely move he jumped right onto one of our shoes and looked up at us. Couldn't really leave him at that point.

He only lasted a week after that, but he was fed and loved and comfortable. I think that's all any creature can hope for, before they go.

TheBestBroster responds:

Thank you, you're probably right about that. :) He was loved and in comfort, and thats all you can really ask for i suppose
