While military service is not mandatory it is very much encouraged, and a large portion of the population have served in or adjacent to the military. Unless they are "Gifted" or "Unique" in which case they get sent to one of the designated home bases, mostly for their, and everyone else's safety. Can't have someone accidentally electrocute a lake or something.

For trench warfare soldiers are usually given a lighter gun, like the Victoria SMG, or, you know, a shotgun.
