Recursive arrays forming large walls.
I often get lost trying to do something in modifiers. One of those is the "array" modifier.
In combination with an object exclusively for rotation and scaling, one can make gigantic structures like these.
My first render attempt crashed, my second one looked like this:
Basically all of these pictures are variations of that.
I next wanted some texture. For that, I made a material that has a random value per cube:
Still very basic and I am experimenting with tighter cubes.
After that, I went on to try compositing a bit more, which is what the main pic ended up being.
