Have you ever heard that cats are a very popular animal companion for witches? Well, this is the case for Phoebe the Friendly Witch. Her cat companion is named Tawny because of his brown fur. Tawny is Phoebe's spirit animal. He was once a powerful wizard who was turned into a cat by the Wiccan Council due to some trouble he got himself in. No one knows what he did that led to him being cursed to live as a cat. Some say he wanted to take over the world, and others say that he kissed a mortal woman and used his magic powers to impress her. He now resides with Phoebe and her family. 

He has a barbed wit and is often the first character to come up with the one-liners or obvious puns in a scene. In addition to world domination, his ambitious plotting often includes attempts to become rich, become a famous celebrity, regain his magical powers, and become human again. When Phoebe has a problem and wants to fix it with magic, Tawny often encourages her, or even supplies her with a magical object to help her fix her problem, but this tends to cause more problems more often than not. Nonetheless, even though he is mischievous, greedy, and egocentric, he has a great big heart and genuinely cares for Phoebe. 

 Some of his favorite pastimes include playing with yarn, lint spotting, surfing the internet, and reading Phoebe's journal.
