Ysturgir

Share

This took me about three hours, twenty nine minutes to draw

Hi, Idiot here again to show you another weird idiot I slapped together while Krita meticulously tortured my laptop. This is Ysturgir, they're another weird monster from Ferrinsyl this time coming from the Iron based species, Relke. Ysturgir is specifically an Ackle, and one with no stolen traits at that.

See, in Ferrinsyl, just about any living thing has a "soul", I call it that because who doesn't like assigning old vague concepts to more specific made up stuff and because I don't want literally every weird thing in this sloppily thrown together lore universe to have some weird name that nobody remembers or knows how to pronounce, I know it's already confusing and convoluted. But regardless, how souls function here is as an actual metaphysical mechanic in how life works; life in Ferrinsyl originated from the universe's special brand of nonsense where chunks of pure elements can form living things when exposed to the right electrical currents and the resulting creature has a metaphysical part that essentially stores the data and general knowledge of the creature. Essentially, souls are to Ferrinsyl natives as the blueprints and deed are to buildings; if something like a Faelin somehow loses their soul, they immediately start forgetting things, stop growing, and lose the ability to heal from even the most minor injury.

What's supposed to make the Relke scary is that they're a species that reproduces modularly with spores and seeds, and a few of their forms are parasitic towards other species. Ackle, for example, are the result of a spore bearing corrosion form giving off spores that essentially pollinate this jellyfish tree thing, and then the tree drops seeds that the Ackle (as well as a few other forms) sprout/hatch from; the real problem here is that most of the time the corrosion form is parasitic and grows on some other creature, stealing what energy and occasionally soul data it can from the host until either the parasite is killed or the host dies. While this corrosion form can grow on rocks just fine, it usually does much better on a living thing, and by taking little bits of it's host's soul it essentially gives it's victim AIDS and dementia wrapped up in one miserable package that looks like rust; the perk for the parasite is that it can embed that misbegotten soul data in it's spores and then it's offspring have a chance to be born with some of the host's traits (kinda like how Kirby's copy abilities work but this time it's poorly designed metal dragon monsters.).

I'm also kinda pondering the idea for Ackle to be able to actively predate upon other creatures in order to do just about the same thing since they're another spore generating form, I don't know how exactly I want that to work yet though so it might not end up being a thing. The idea comes from another idea where since Iron is kinda magnetic sometimes, it'd be neat if Ackles could use the matte black section on the top of the head and neck to manipulate magnetic fields, letting them use the area between their neck and shoulder spines like a railgun and/or making very small aurora-like electromagnetic disturbances in the air above them; I specifically thought it would be kinda metal if the bootleg aurora stuff could on occasion show flickers of an Ackle's victims, Faelin and Cyufelk eyes are both forms of ionized particles in sheltered recesses on the body so if it doesn't have occasional imagery of actual creatures it could at least have a bunch of eyes or something.

As for Ysturgir as a character, I like the idea of them being a bit more of an athletic type, I've never really fleshed out pastimes for these aliens but I'd like to assume that there'd be weird little alien sports (god imagine a soccer/football-basketball hybrid where the baskets have flying goalies and the opponents can shoulder check you into next week). Maybe they use their innately dangerous heritage to terrorize people that would otherwise discriminate against them for being from the soul eating race, nothing outright hostile just faking people out or making it look like they've actually taken souls before with the aurora thing; a sort of "take no grief but do no harm" sort of mentality where they just like playing moderately dark pranks on rude and closeminded people. so essentially Ysturgir is like a secretly wholesome gym bro that's also blatantly a vampiric eldritch monstrosity that went vegan, they aren't actually going to hurt anyone unless they really have to but that doesn't mean they can't act like a huffy egotist around strangers, maybe they aren't even justified in their actions but are just far enough in line that nobody actually wants to risk life and limb to put them in their place.

Oh also here's a version that doesn't have the smoke in case anybody wanted that:iu_621674_9771741.webp
