On Cauldron Lane - between the once stately, but now dilapidated homes of the mad alchemists and doctors living there - stood a tree that had been dead for many years by now. One morning, there was a nest built on one of its long barren branches and soon after, it was occupied by cheerily chirping chicks. It was an extremely rare sight, as birds and most other animals that aren't considered vermin avoided the sunless city of Mordenay like the plague.

 Nobody knew what kind of birds they were - as the nest was too high up to see - but it didn't matter, as the happy sounds coming from the nest finally left passers-by with a feeling of hope, gratefulness and nostalgia to the once green plains of their homeland Hiraeth. If birds would choose to live in Mordenay, maybe the future was brighter than they thought, right?

But they never saw the chicks fly from their nest.

One cold morning, the nest was gone. Snatched up by a cat or perhaps rats, or a starving tramp, but other rumors quickly started spreading around that one of the immoral surgeons from Cauldron Lane got a hold of it - one of the 'Stitchers'. And the rumors only worsened when those who wandered the streets at night started talking about a foul-smelling creature roaming the alleyways, making sounds that would chill one to the bone. Sounds -though distorted and tormented - that reminded one an awful lot of the chirping of recently hatched chicks...
