This might sound silly in this situation, but let's be honest, letting AI determine what/who is people based on just how they look is going to inevitably result in some weird boundary creep which either results in killing the crew because "they aren't people" or killing the crew to protect equipment from the crew because "both of them are people but the crew presents more of a risk to the equipment than the other way around."
