Actually, the defining trait for tentacles is where the suckers are. Namely they're only considered tentacles if the suckers are located only at the tip as in the two longest limb on most large squid. It's one of those interesting snapple facts that octopi don't "technically" have tentacles*. Of course this is purely in the technical aspect and in common use terms tentacles are basically any long thin and highly flexible limbs.
