Yeah… this is undoubtedly true to a degree.
A man without ideals, as Gnarly pointed out is indeed broken. He is broken because something had hit him at his core and lost what helped made him. Alcoholism and addiction is only a symptom of how broken a man is. The deeper the core is damaged and the longer it goes without being healed the more fragmented he becomes.
I could go on about the philosophical issue surrounding a broken man having been fragmented once. But on the notion of your piece captures the idea very well.
