Surfacing by Brian Sword

Share

"Finally, Glee-chan! You're using your re-draw skills for some good!" - Fan, probably.

Okay, some context. This is a re-draw of Brian Sword's masterpiece Surfacing as seen on a YouTube video called Art1992. It was an art submission up for sale during some PBS art auction show in the 90s. Mostly the pieces sold on this show is what you'd expect from the art community, then some mad lad named Brian Sword started submitting furry art, specifically a Rat couple doing "silly" things. The comedy of both the show-runners allowing these pieces on their show combined with the commentators desperately trying to describe the thing without sounded like a complete wack job is just about the funniest thing you'll ever see. When I came a cross this, I was laughing to literal tears.

As far as the art is concerned, this is me trying to duplicate one of the pieces Brian Sword submitted. I only really had the low-quality footage from that YouTube link that I posted above to go by, so I'm pretty sure I'm not accurate, but I'd say I'm pretty close! As far as I can tell, there are no detailed images of his works online, only screenshots and John Oliver buying one somehow. So consider this preserving a history that no one asked to be preserved. I did not add my signature as there is no transformative elements I added (other than my inaccuracies.). I was trying to duplicate this thing as closely as possible so I wasn't seeking to change anything. Credit 100% belongs to Brian Sword, where ever this crazy mofo is.

I'm proud of you reaching the point where you upload what you want even if it pisses people off even if you did this mostly as a gag. Well you were already kind of doing that, but I know you had some trepidation with posting this one. Overall, great reproduction.

glee-chan responds:

I was more scared because Ididn't want a bunch of Furry requests. But I forgot that I have like people who talk to me now so I shouldn't have worried. My biggest follower count is on Pixiv (3.4K) and no one talks there. People talk to me more here, but no one cares about my art except the loyalist, lol. So as shitty as deviantFart was I still miss it. It was perfect combination of people caring about my art and having a social aspect to it. I mean I can draw what I want to now (except DC art) but audience are loli fetishists wondering when I'll draw Kid Wonder Woman again.

You've captured the spirit of his work wonderfully. Like pewter, I love how the fluids turned out. The expressions are incredibly lively.

glee-chan responds:

Yeah, I spent a lot of time on something so niche, lol. I don't know why I do this.

I actually only know about this artist, because of Jon Oliver buying his painting. It's another one of the various weird things he's bought for the show. This piece is definitely something, you did a good job on the milk, yeah we'll call it milk. Honestly whenever I think you can't surprise me with what you'll draw, you do. I don't remember, but is this your first furry art? It's possible you've done some in the past and I just forgot.

glee-chan responds:

I've done a a few Lola Bunny and some Roxanne, but I don't think I don't more than that. Maybe one with Chip and Gadget? I can't remember.
