Mai's Evolution

Share

So I thought I'd draw Mai from Dragonball Evolution (the only redeeming thing of that movie) in the animated style. Why did I do this?

Dragonball Evolution was a 2009 American butchering of an adaptation of Akira Toriyama's original manga/anime Dragon Ball. It's directed by James Wong, produced by Stephen Chow, and written by Ben Ramsey and stars Eriko Tamura as Mai.

In the anime, the first time I saw Mai appear, I thought she looked lethal. Like a badass femme fatale. But she turned out to be rather clumsy If I'm remembering correctly. Or maybe she just had lots of bad luck. I only ever saw a handful of episodes from that anime.

Yea this movie made some interesting decisions, to put it kindly. I've never understood the need to take an animated series and make it live action. I can see books and comics making sense, since live action adds more elements to them, but those are already present in animation.

On the actual painting, you nailed it. Toriyama's style seems to be one that comes naturally to you or that you practiced a lot. You're able to pull off clean lines and a simplified character design well.

I was thinking about this movie very recently, like yesterday, must have picked up on this coming since I'm psychic. lol

Maybe? Originally I was looking to do some Artificial Human Number 18 art. I was just Google Image searching pictures of #18 to see what was out there and to see if a theme would spark up, then I saw a picture of Mai sprinkled in the mix because Google be Google. So I thought "I haven't done Mai since some big group shot years ago" so I switched to looking at Mai images. Most of that was Trunks/Mai shipping because of Dragonball Super, and I wasn't interested in any of that, but then a live action image started peppering the pictures. I was like "Oh yeah! Mai and ChiChi were hot" and that's that.
