Old School Daioh

I thought I'd draw Osaka and Kagura from Azumanga Daioh. So I did. The Osaka pic is from a screenshot from the anime, while Kagura is me trying to make a plastic model of her look animation accurate.

....

Look, just be happy I'm not doing another Archie picture.

Still an Azumanga Daioh fan, I see.
It was (and still is) a good show.

Fantastic Render as always

I think the only characters I really related to were Tomo and Kaorin, although Kagura was cute. These are super nice.

My favorites were obviously Osaka and Kagura, but Kaorin was a favorite too. Tomo could get on my nerves if there was a lot of her, but the show was pretty good at spacing her spaz out moments so she didn't get to be too much. I did enjoy the dummy trio that Tomo, Osaka, and Kagura had (and that Kagura did not want to be in the dummy trio, lol). My best friend at the time had a huge crush on Saki, life imitating art, which is a bit funny to me. I think the only forgettable character really was Yomi because she basically had to be the straight man for every joke. Her one gimmick was wanting to loose weight, but the design made her look exactly like everyone else so I never got why she was obsessed with that. Oh also: Yukari or Nyamo. Choose your Teachfu. (Should I include Kimura? lmfao)

What big eyes she has - which is nothing new for anime. But it's the first thing I saw.

glee-chan responds:

This anime is probably one of the only ones I've seen where one of the characters notices the light bubble reflection in her eye and actively tries to find it while sitting and staring at her desk. It's so absurd it's funny.

I know I've seen Osaka before, but I'm not familiar with the anime. You did a good job with Osaka, the walking pose feels natural and you can almost feel that slight breeze. Kagura does look a bit stiff, especially when compared to Osaka. The body feels like it's nice and relax, but the smile feels stiff. That being said, still better than anything I could do and once again, you've shown off how versatile you are as this is a completely different style from the Archie stuff.

glee-chan responds:

Azumanga Daioh was probably one of the first anime to be sort of a "nothing" anime, in that it didn't really have a plot and it was a slice of life. No seriously, there is no goal for any of the characters other than going to school. The show is held up by the cast of characters. Lucky Star sort of followed suit on this, but even they had more of a gimmick and plot than Azumanga Daioh. At the time I compared the show to being "Anime Seinfeld", only the characters aren't as mean spirited (well most aren't, lol). The anime started a lot of trends in the early 2000s, so I think if you were to watch it today it might feel dated even though at the time everything they were doing was fresh. It was normalish girls with absurdish humor. This anime also is one of the few (I think) that also played a lot of comic timing, leaving a lot of dead space to make a joke land hard. So they'd repeat an animation a few times to the point where you're wondering how long they're going to do this, and once they do it again, you're laughing. I'm sure you've heard the soundtrack for this floating around everywhere because the music for the show became a meme itself. ANYWAY, yeah, if you want something easy-going, light, and fun to watch this is a good anime for that. It's what I think people might call "cozy"? There's no action, fan service, romance, drama, or tragedy. It's just fun...somehow.
