recently, there have been rumours going around that the cut level from sonic CD (known only as R2 in the game's files) has finally been given its official name by none other than the director of the game, thirty years after its release. the evidence for this is in this tweet: https://twitter.com/Instrutilus/status/1617540520993226753?s=20

on account of having eyes and a brain stem, i was left with a few questions.

the first was the name. dubious depths?? not only does it sound stupid as shit, but it also FEELS like a bait name. its tantamount to revealing that R2's name all along was "fuck you nerds". anyway my actual concern was the fact that naoto oshima is verified on instagram, but clearly isnt in the screenshot

again, anyone with eyes and brain would take that as an obvious indication of japery and fakery, but i decided to be clever. the tweet linked a forum user on sonic retro called "master dreamcaster". i investigated and found the original thread. it was actually a thread from like july or something that had died and apparently been reawoken slightly shittier by this ""discovery"" a few weeks ago. but that wasnt all! the actual user, masterdreamcaster had been on sonic retro for literally not even a WEEK before showing up with this revolutionary discovery. wow. impressive, right?

anyway, according to him the verification tick wasnt there because it "doesnt work on mobile". now, i still have eyes and brain, but i also have twitter. hint: it does fucking work. of course it fucking works. elon has done nothing but MAKE SURE THAT THE VERIFICATION TICK SHOWS UP EVERYWHERE HE CAN PUT IT

the more obvious issue is that like... the developers have NEVER commented on R2 by name, and rarely ever refer to it anyway. people seem to take that really poorly, but its pretty obvious to me that it's because sonic cd is 30 years old, these people have been making hundreds of video games in the years since, and nobody remembers or cares enough to check if it was even far enough in development to HAVE a name. we've found builds of sonic cd that call palmtree panic "salad plain". if we're getting a name for an area that was cut so early, it won't probably wont be reflective of a final name anyway.

masterdreamcaster was probably just fucking with the thread, but the interesting thing is that everyone took him at his word; both in the thread (eventually) AND in the related tweets. some people asked for sources, but other than that there was no scepticism that went as far as to claim that the images were clearly false. you cant seriously tell me that these fuckers are so starved for information on sonic CD that they will believe lies, right? well, it wouldnt be the first time that it happened.

anyway, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. dont fall for these attention seeking hucksters because they can make up the shittiest sonic zone name known to man.
