Cartoon Cuties No.6 - Mrs Hudson, Sherlock Hound

Share

Next on our Cartoon Cutie Wednesdays, we have Mrs. Hudson, from the Italian-Japanese co-production Sherlock Hound, (Meitantei Hōmuzu - which literally is Famous Detective Holmes) an adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, where it features the characters in this world as anthropomorphic canines- in Hudson's case, she was a Golden Retriever. The 26 episode show ran from 1984 to 1985. Due note the Episodes are out of order in the English dub - example Ep.1 is 11 in the English version. As far as I can tell, no one knows why was done this way, the Wiki article gives the correct order; I have not found a place that contains the Japanese version. Miyazaki provided direction to 6 Episodes, but when problems with the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle estate arose, production was halted; when these where resolved, Miyazaki had moved on to other productions, leaving Kyosuke Mikuriya to complete the rest of the series.

Mrs. Hudson (first name Marie) is the landlady of Sherlock Hound and Dr. Watson - unlike the general interpretations of the character, where is often portrayed as an older woman on her 50s, the show's version is far younger, in her 20's, and a widow. Before the start of the show, she was briefly married to Jim, a pilot who died on his plane when it exploded mid flight just weeks after their wedding, she stayed in London there after, where she became the landlady of Hounds' Home in Baker Street. Jim's surname is not given, though considering Marie is referred to as the Mrs. Hudson despite been a widow, leaves not much room to really guess his full name may had been Jim Hudson; though it is possible she return to her Maiden surname when he died but kept the title of "Mrs".

Mrs. Hudson has shown to be of serene and level headed personality - even when she was kidnapped by Moriarty, she did not show fear, but was concern for his state of living and his henchmen, generally as all the hideouts are dumps and never tended to, so she helped clean up the lake island hideout to a respectable condition (somehow it became a Mansion lol) and she cook meals for the villains, thus becoming the only individual Moriarty and his men showed any concern for while escaping from Hound and the Police.

In the instances she joins Hound and Watson in their cases, she demonstrates to be assertive under emergencies - like taking command while saving an old friend pinned in his down plane before it exploded, likely reliving Jim's death in her mind - is a skill daring driver and agile pilot in her right, as well a crack shooter; she is quick and resourceful, the latter thanks to her connections in the field of aviation during her days when she and Jim were at the Airfield - mostly because the other pilots had romantic feelings for her as well and were heart broken when she married Jim and will help no matter what - the Dogs ... literally.

All the male characters in the show are romantically attracted to her, Hound been no exception, but for the most part, she doesn't seem to notice.

Fun fact: seems Miyazaki originally wanted her to be the true brains of Baker Street, running rings around Hound and Moriarty, but was overruled.

Mrs. Hudson was voiced by Yōko Asagami (Japanese), Patricia Paris (English) and Cristina Grado (Italian).
