Undertale X Squid Game: SquidTale

Share

Last week, a new Netflix reality show: "Squid Game: The Challenge" got released. This new reality show is based on the 2021 South Korean drama series: "Squid Game" where 456 contestants compete in various children's games to get a chance to win 4.56 million USD, the largest contestant roster and the largest cash prize of all other reality shows! I watched the first 5 episodes last week shortly after it got released and it was a wild ride! ...and in a good way! However, many people watching it, especially critics and audiences doesn't seem to like it, either because of terrible filming conditions, lack of well-being to the contestants, ripping off MrBeast's real-life recreation of Squid Game which also had 456 players participating or all the events being staged. Regardless, I am looking forward to seeing the last five episodes tomorrow or in 8 days' time.

This pixel artwork showcases 18 Undertale/Deltarune characters in Squid Game jumpsuits, along with the player numbers that I think are the best fit for them, either based on the actual drama or the game show:

001 - Flowey - Both Flowey and Oh Il-Nam (Player 001 from the drama) start off as nice people in their first appearances which after some time, would turn out to be a facade as their internal selves are evil. Flowey initially wanted to teach the player on how Undertale works but attempted to kill the player right after (thankfully Toriel stopped him). Oh Il-Nam was first introduced as a Squid Game player in Squid Game's 1st episode, but revealed himself to be the creator of the Squid Games 8 episodes later.

067 - Susie - Both Susie and Kang Sae-Byeok (Player 067 from the drama) were initially in bad terms with the protagonists from their respective medias (Kris from Deltarune and Seong Gi-Hun from Squid Game) but over time, developed friendships with the protagonists. In Deltarune, Susie picked a fight with Kris when she thought Kris caught her eating the chalk from Alphys's classroom as she worries that she'd get expelled for it, shall Kris inform Alphys. During and after their adventures in the dark worlds, Kris and Susie eventually became friends up until now. Seong Gi-Hun was quite pissed at Sae-Byeok at the start of Squid Game since she pickpocketed his winnings from the horse race. During the Squid Games however, they eventually form a friendship/alliance.

069 - Asgore - A common thing Asgore and Player 069 from the drama share is that they are both in their own husband-wife pairs, as the husbands. Asgore made a new order to kill all humans that fall to the Underground, resulting in his wife, Toriel leaving him. Player 069 reluctantly battled against his own wife, Player 070 in a game of marbles and won at the cost of his wife's life. Both were heartbroken as a result but only Player 069 committed suicide afterwards.

070 - Toriel - A common thing Toriel and Player 070 from the drama share is that they are both in their own husband-wife pairs, as the wives. Toriel left her husband, Asgore, as she disagreed with his new order to kill all humans that fall to the Underground. Player 070 reluctantly battled against her own husband, Player 069 in a game of marbles and lost, resulting in her death. In both cases, their husbands were heartbroken.

101 - Undyne - Both Undyne and Jang Deok-Su (Player 101 from the drama) have violent behaviours. However, Undyne has a better personality because at least she is loyal to her own kind, strived to be heroic and at least showed mercy to the human provided that he/she does not kill any of her friends. Jang Deok-Su however was purely heartless for a gangster, especially since during his time in the Squid Games, he and his gang started a riot that killed 27 players. Even before this he ruthlessly killed Player 271 when he just confronted him over stealing other players' meals.

111 - Alphys - Alphys and Byeong-Gi (Player 111 from the drama) are both doctors/scientists. Alphys is the royal scientist of the Underground and her scientific expertise was used in creating a "SOUL", or a robotic body for a ghost, to which it would become Mettaton. Alphys also performs experiments in hopes that the monsters can quickly escape the Underground. Byeong-Gi on the other hand was an actual doctor before entering the Squid Games. During the Squid Games, Byeong-Gi used his medical expertise to traffick organs from deceased players so that he gets information of the next games beforehand.

132 - Chara - Like how Chara used to be like Frisk, falling into the Underground, Hwang In-Ho/The Front Man (Player 132 from the drama, but 5 years before the events) used to be like Seong Gi-Hun, participating in the Squid Games.

182 - Jockington - Jockington and TJ Stukes (Player 182 from the reality show) are very helpful to certain people. Jockington once volunteered to be Catti's "hula hoop" when all the other hula hoops ran out in one of the gym classes they attended and are now partners since then. In the reality show, TJ really helped his team in Warships (game #3) and because of him, not only did his team win quickly, everyone in his team survived at the end of the game. Way to go TJ!

199 - Papyrus - Papyrus and Ali Abdul (Player 199 from the drama) are both kind-hearted in their own ways. Papyrus was supposed to capture the human (Frisk) to earn a position in the Royal guard but his kind-heartedness prevented it. Besides, he was really friendly towards Frisk, allowing Frisk to visit his house, and even both hung out together in his room. Ali Abdul's heroic act was when he saved Seong Gi-Hun from his death when Gi-Hun fell down (which the doll from Red Light, Green Light (game #1) might have detected as moving (and causing Gi-Hun's elimination)), by pulling his jumpsuit to prevent the fall.

212 - Catti - Both Catti and Han Mi-Nyeo (Player 212 from the drama) are not too socialable to those around them. Catti is almost always on her phone 24/7 and can't seem to speak full sentences. In addition, Catti doesn't connect well with her sister, Catty, and is kind of embarrassed by her own family. Han Mi-Nyeo was rather manipulative and would only form strong or friendly allies to climb to the top. Her manipulative behaviour kind of pissed everyone else off and was the reason why in Marbles (game #4), she ended up without a partner (but she was guaranteed immunity since she was exempt from the game).

218 - Sans - To be honest, it would be hard to connect Sans with Cho Sang-Woo (Player 218 from the drama) by their personalities, but one similarity I can think of is their duel with the protagonists from their respective medias: (Frisk from Undertale and Seong Gi-Hun from Squid Game). In Undertale's Genocide route, Sans battles Frisk after he had enough of the massacres happening in the Underground (especially those that caused the deaths of Toriel, Papyrus (his brother), Undyne and Mettaton), caused by Frisk. Cho Sang-Woo only battled Seong Gi-Hun because they were the 2 finalists who survived prior to the 6th and final game of the Squid Game. Kang Sae-Byeok would have been one of those finalists if Cho Sang-Woo did not kill her after game #5.

240 - Noelle - Both Noelle and Ji-yeong (Player 240 from the drama) have very close connections to their own respective female associates: Susie and Sae-Byeok. In fact, Noelle actually does have a crush on Susie and Ji-yeong developed feelings with Sae-Byeok after sharing their pasts and their intentions when they win the Squid Game. Their respective fathers however, can't be the same. Noelle's father, Rudy is in very good terms with his daughter, even protecting her and playing video games with her. Ji-yeong's father was abusive to Ji-yeong and her mother, despite being devoted to religion. Ji-yeong killed her father after he killed her mother and went to jail as a result.

244 - Kris - Both Kris and Player 244 from the drama have their own beliefs: the former with the belief of the Delta Rune legend and the latter with the belief of Christianity.

278 - Mettaton - In a way, both Mettaton and Player 278 from the drama were rather arrogant. But personality-wise, out of the two, Mettaton is better because even though he uses his shows in an attempt to kill the player, he doesn't go as far as being rude and vulgar, unlike Player 278.

324 - Asriel - Both Asriel and Player 324 from the drama died too soon in their own medias. Asriel was already deceased even before the events of Undertale started, but Player 324 started out alive in Squid Game's first episode, yet he is the first contestant to be out of the game, albeit shot to death.

330 - Ralsei - Ralsei and Dr. Kien Vuu (Player 330 from the reality show) provided a significant amount of help to their associates. In Deltarune, Ralsei has healing spells that can heal Health Points for his fellow party members (Kris and Susie) without reliance on consumables. In the reality show, Dr. Kien Vuu did help other contestants relax and relieve stress during the games or in the dormitory via his medical knowledge.

432 - Berdly - Berdly and Bryton Constantin (Player 432 from the reality show) were both arrogant in their ways. Berdly got his ego simply because as a young child, he battled Noelle in a spelling bee and won. As a result, he now cared about getting excellent grades throughout his life and acts like he is smart. Bryton Constantin is one of the contestants I used to root for in the reality show, given that he is a strong player with a cunning strategy to get his way to the top, which I do admire. However, he was occasionally shown to be a bit rude and egotistic towards his fellow competitors which is something the other contestants (or to a lesser extent, the audience) dislike.

456 - Frisk - Both Frisk and Seong Gi-Hun (Player 456 from the drama) can make their way out of their own miseries with the power of determination. For Frisk's case, that is escaping the Underground while being targeted by the monsters (the inhabitants). For Seong Gi-Hun's case, that is escaping his unpayable debt as a result of his gambling addiction. Also, both are the main protagonists of their own medias (Undertale for the former and Squid Game for the latter).
