Here's another batch of concept sketches for Graveyard Shift! These are layout sketches of the mansion interior when I was trying to figure out what each room should look like.
The mansion foyer went through the most revisions as I really wanted to get it right. It needed to be expansive enough like a real mansion and also wide enough so a camera pan could reveal Greg's operator booth in the corner.
I think the "melon baller" room sketch was the easiest. I based it off my grandmother's house where she used to have an upright piano in a small room by the entrance of the house.
The second to last image shows what became the "Crypt of Candy." I think the broken door on the left was originally going to be the Crypt, but I thought it looked to sinister and the kids wouldn't get excited to open it. I still like the light pouring out though!
The exterior of the house is actually heavily inspired by the real-life Daly Mansion in Montana. I visited it years ago and took a bunch of photos that ended up being extremely helpful guiding the look and feel of the mansion in the animation! It's a fascinating place to visit if you ever get the opportunity!
