improved leather bifold wallet

Share

A while back I designed a bifold leather wallet here and I still daily drive it six months later, however, after using it for so long, I have thought about ways to improve it. so when a co-worker came to me complaining about how after six moths of use, his wallet has begun to rip at the seams and is basically now a leather folder rather than a wallet, it gave me the inspirations to finally make an improved design

I wanted to keep the overall design pretty similar to the previous wallet so I took the original design files and sketched the dimension for the pieces. One of my main issues with the old design was that the cards can be a little difficult to pull out. as a solution, I

#1 made the pieces 5 mm shorter and therefore the wallet is a little slimmer as a whole

and #2 made a thin hole to push with your thumb

this makes it a lot easier to to pull out the cards,

the triangle pieces that give the wallet its tiers, also has a deeper middle notch to hold the card from the back

the middle notch can be seen on those pieces on the left

another thing that i thought about improving, was the mid-flap, in the old wallet, the mid-flap is shorter than the rest of the wallet which makes it a little akward, so instead, gave the mid-flap another tier and a divider so it can hold about 4 times the cards now and its now an even size all around which, in my opinion, make sit look more balanced

here's a pic of the mid-flap

something else of note is that instead of having a square shape, the ID window is now a sort of arrow shape, in the old design, whenever I tried to put my ID back, it would often bump into the bottom border. this new design solves that issue without having to also sew a plastic sheet between the card and the leather

one last detail is that I got some edge-flex, it gives a nice finish to oil tanned leather

it was a little rushed and I also lot the tool to apply it so it looks a little bit rough but overall, I am pretty happy with the result and its definitely and improvement from my last wallet. I won't be using it since I gave it to my co-worker but I'll probably make another one with the same design
