I got commissioned by my dad to make him a ....long? hotdog fold style? wallet

i made the original prototype out of paper and to see if it would work, it did and I was happy with the size so i cut out the leather

I was pretty proud of myself for this, when it came time to stitch everything, i was able to hide the ends in the edge and glue it back to hide it

I originally wanted to have coin purses but when I actually cut out the leather, i realized that it was going to be very impractical for a couple of reasons.

  1. the leather would be too tight
  2. i got the wrong size rivets
  3. wrong size eyelet

the rivets to close the wallet are to tall and to install the one that are there, i had to put a little piece of leather between the rivet and the leather, else it would be too lose

when the eyelets came, i realized that i did not make enough space for it in the plans bc i thought the eyelet was gonna be smaller and although i do have smaller eyelets, i dont have the right size setter and it ends up crushing them instead:(

i was forced to use that size eyelet and due to how the wallet curves, i believe that in a year, the leather would start to tear around that area

also the leather seems to have some spots where the grain is still on and it looks a little splotchy so i have to take that into consideration when i cut out pieces in the future

i used so edge flex for the edges and im pretty happy with the results but no matter how much i sanded the edges smooth, i couldn't get a one layer result i liked, i would apply a coat let it dry and sand it down unit it made a smooth-ish layer and continue the process until i thought it was smooth enough

this is roughly how most people wear them from what my dad told me

overall, not too upset at the results, im happy that it done bc i started to get a bit frustrated towards the end when the metal components i bought didn't fit right

I also recently bought some vegetable tanned leather which i think i like more.

i find that the oil tanned leather i have is very stretchy witch makes it kinda hard to work with and makes the edges a pain to get nice and smooth

too bad tho because i bought a whole half of a hide so im not runny out of it any time soon
