The man calling himself "Espresso" was one of the saviours of the McDaniel's under attack by a demon, and was the one to notice two unusually combat proficient McDaniel's employees: these two were Elijah and Ashley, a twin brother and sister who seemed rather unfazed by the attack, other than worrying about getting fired. Espresso gave them the offer to join an agency who dealt with such incident, otherwise, they would have their memories wiped like the rest of the victims. Elijah and Ashley accepted mainly because they would have some excitement in their lives, and that they would likely be fired after the incident.

Espresso was a SPIRAL transfer from Australia, who transferred to the American West Coast after manpower shortages in the north-western area: he saw an opportunity in seeing the rest of the world, so he volunteered for the transfer. Espresso specialises in survival, trap set-ups, and preparation - many times preparing before anything ever significant happens: having caches of various supplies hidden around an area. His background in survival makes him very knowledgeable about various plants and animals on Earth, which makes him the first person to ask if they encounter any fancy flowers or critters.
