very cool game with lots of juiciness and potential but I wish that some of the upgrades were more consequential or zany and that there was a reason to switch weapons mid-game.

Those are roguelike games for ya!
I can't tell if the power-ups are permanent/cumulative or not. The HP units especially look like individual cells that can be emptied and filled (ie: a current/max HP system), rather than something you either just have or don't (how this game actually works).
Also the 100% loss of progress on death means that getting far and then losing is just too much time lost to warrant trying again.
Fun while it lasts though.

Music and SFX are awesome. I love the pixel art. Gameplay was solid, controls were responsive. I really enjoyed this!
