Reviews for "once upon a city"

If you just finished reading a complete telephone book,
this one should be pretty exciting.
stars for:
* music
* animation

I somehow managed to get to the end, which was both abrupt and nonsensical. The brother has just been going from safehouse to safehouse, just barely missing his brother's arrival, then at the end the brother writes about a blinding white light and how he can't find anyone (implying that he's dead?). If that's true, there wouldn't even have been a way for him to write the letter in the first place. Furthermore, the purple gas looked like it stayed at about foot level, so everyone could have easily moved to the roof of a building or something.

I wished the checkpoints would have disappeared whenever they were visited so that the direction arrows didn't get confused.
Nice music and animation though.

Good effort I guess but as a game it falls short, both the story and game mechanics lacking depths.

Story: The story is meant to drive the player to explore/solve/fulfill whatever conditions the game throws at the player. The story in this game is rather unclear, I know that i've returned to a wartorn town, but the reasons why I'm doing what I'm doing is kind off muddy. I guess that the notes/checkpoints are letters left by ones brother and I'm trying to find him, but there is no motivation to do so.

Game mechanics: So I walk around a town full of dead ends, there is a timer (hunger) and some sort of toxic gas. Essentially this just a classic maze with a timer. If not for the compass/hints it would have been insuffarable, however with the timer it effectively stops being a maze and just becomes 'pressing the arrows in the direction the game tells me'. The toxic gas does nothing really, one can just walk through it since the checkpoint will be close enough anyway (giving half heal after a respawn).

For a higher rating, I'd want there to be a more fleshed out game mechanics. Something to do except walking in the direction the hint-compass points me to. The story could do with something to drive the conflict, and with some clarity (there is alot of exposition, but it doesnt really say anything). A more detailed world would help greatly, which would reward exploration/getting lost.
(All of theese would ofcourse require tremendous amounts of time from the developer, which a free newgrounds game might not deserve).

Finally, mazes are only fun if there is something waiting at the end.

Awful... the city looked like randomly scattered around, as I often hit obstacles in my way and died a lot of times. The speeches are odd and I can't understand even three out of ten words.
What it needs: Maybe a map (for the game to be challenging, obviously the map shows the city before the nuke or whatever, so you can't know where the road is blocked... but just have an idea of it. Secondly: SUBTITLES, for God's love...

have you tried both the WASD and the arrow keys? sometimes it helps if you activate the screen by pressing it
