An incredible idea that needs to be heard!
A Unity game is rare to see these days. What's rarer is a Unity game that's really, really good. What's even rarer than that is a Unity game that's really, really good, and has a powerful message! And that's what you get with Nothing to Hide, an interesting new take on the genre of thought-provoking satire.
The concept: You play as the daughter to a political candidate running for the presidency of a corrupt, psychologically abusive Neo-America that tracks the every move of all its citizens through monitoring equipment and social media. When she decides she can't take any more of it, she runs away to try to escape it all. But she has a ways to go, as she must make her way through the city while staying in sight, lest dangerous consequences occur.
The idea that's being depicted here isn't as far-fetched as people would imagine: even today, the U.S. and other countries are trying to harness the power of social and video media to keep tabs on people's everyday lives. While not to this extent, this is a grim setting that has all the potential to become a reality if we're not careful. The game relishes in this setting, creating an internal debate of protection of the system vs. individual rights and freedoms not only within the game's protagonist, but for players as well. I always thought to myself when I was playing through this: how close are we to being in a similar scenario where we live?
As for gameplay, it's a crazy and unique concept: the only way to progress is to be seen. As you go through levels, the objective is to stay in a line of sight of one of the monitoring iEyes. Stay in sight, you can get through the level. Eyes lose sight of you? Game Over.
The failure state of the game, while sometimes unforgiving, is not unfair to you. The game will never be cheap about failure unless you did something to trigger it, which is a very good thing; this makes it so that your chances of success are purely based on your puzzle-solving abilities. The game is also understanding of the player's limits; the difficulty will gradually increase, and will always give you the time to understand and apply the mechanics in order to beat the level.
And what's probably the biggest kicker of it all is that the game is uncopyrighted. Yep, you heard it right. You can do with the game however you want; mod it, "pirate" it, host it on your own site, record yourself playing it, it's all what you decide to do! Too many games these days are heavily copyrighted, meaning the slightest thing they don't want you to say or show, you're in a heap of legal trouble. But Nothing to Hide has literally nothing to hide; "By giving up 'power' over our art, our art can have more power." This is an incredibly bold move, as they're giving up all rights to the game in its entirety, which, in turn, makes it much more accessible and unique to the public domain.
And did I mention the music yet? The soundtrack is tastefully done by our resident HalcyonicFalconX, who did an outstanding job at setting the tone for this crazy, almost nightmarish world. This is only amplified by the interesting artstyle, itself rather signature to Nutcasenightmare, whom we know from as the creator of the ":The Game:" series. what these two brought to the plate was nothing less than golden.
After that, what else is there to say? Well, it's not complete. The game has a long ways to go before it's fully-developed, and that's where the community steps in! The game currently has a crowdfunding campaign that's happening as we speak, and I highly recommend anyone who likes this game to go and support them! This is the sort of gem that you don't let go so easily. Nothing to Hide is something to see, and I can't wait to see the full product upon release! Great job, Nutcase and Halcyonic, and best of luck with the full game! Until then, smile for the camera.
