Reviews for "Earth Taken"

good game over all but A.I. needs a little work but the game is great and keep up the good work!

SeethingSwarm responds:

Thank you! Glad you liked the game. This is the first time I've made companions like this and I'm pretty proud of them, but yeah, they can be very stupid sometimes! :D I'm gonna do my best to improve on their intelligence for the sequel. Thanks for the feedback and the nice score!

Really well made game but the whole gas mask thing was frustrating as hell when you can't find any despite looking everywhere and have to restart a level you were near the end of :<

SeethingSwarm responds:

Oh, sorry that aspect frustrated you. The key is to be well-prepared, but I realize that most of the time you just don't know how many gas masks you will need for the next unknown chapter. I guess one way of fixing this could be if I make it so that when you have only one or two gas masks left, you will always find a gas mask when you pick up supplies. I'll keep this in mind for the sequel. Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the game otherwise. Oh, and thanks for still voting fairly even though you got frustrated :)

Awesome game, I would play every day.

SeethingSwarm responds:

Thank you, glad you like the game :) And thanks for the 5 stars!

I'm torn between loving this game and being frustrated; the controls on the shooting and the physics of it could be really frustrating, at times where I would be shoot by aliens and not able to shoot back. The artwork and the setting was fantastic though and I loved exploring it. Unfortunately I was unable to beat the UFO as I ran out of ammo, even going as far as trying to throw aliens at it so they explode near the ship and didn't feel compelled to start all over again. I would suggest a weak point to do massive damage! The AI kind of irked me as survivors would always find themselves near or jumping into explosives. All together I am excited by it though and look forward to more of your work!

SeethingSwarm responds:

Thanks for the review! I'm glad you liked the game and I'm sorry the controls felt frustrating. When you get damaged, there is a short period of time where you get stunned. Maybe the stun period is a bit too long or perhaps entirely redundant.

I'm glad you appreciate the atmosphere and art! I'm pretty satisfied with it myself :)

I could have made the UFO a bit weaker perhaps, and I really should have added a health bar for it. I don't remember why I decided against it. Stupid me. However, A fully upgraded flamethrower is very effective against it.

The survivors that run and fight with you are my first attempt to create dynamic companions. Even though I am very proud of them, I have to agree that they can be very stupid sometimes! I'll try my best to improve their intelligence for the sequel!

Thanks again for the feedback, It helps a lot :)

The game is completely keyboard controlled, but there are no keyboard controls in the menus.
You can't rebind the keys, and there are only two presets, neither of which include mouse support. Shooting mechanics are finicky and outdated, and there's really no reason to not enable mouse control for gunplay. Only streetlights can be shot, not hanging or ceiling lights or any other kind of lights, which is misleading at first, and I wasted a bit of ammo trying to shoot out the first hanging light. Aliens' guns' position and direction aren't actually indicative of the direction they're looking or aiming, so it is impossible to know if they are aiming at you if you are on a different level than them, and there is no indication of when they are going to shoot, either. Speaking of animations and indications, the jumping animations are absolutely terrible. Background music is also extremely repetitive and there is no way to mute it without muting all sound.

Ultimately, this game's mechanics just aren't very good at all, and it didn't have anything else to keep me interested.

SeethingSwarm responds:

You CAN shoot out all the lights! :D Sorry to disappoint you with the controls. I designed this game for people who prefer using the keyboard alone. I know we are the minority and that it is a bit outdated, but nowadays these kind of games only cater for people who prefer mouse to aim and shoot. Luckily for you there are a million of those games out there. For the minority who still prefer the glory days of Alien Hominid, Contra etc, there's not all that much... so I made this game for myself and the rest of the minority. I don't want to force the Mouse People to play this game; it just makes me a bit sad when people try to make me feel like it's wrong of me to make a game like this solely for the keyboard. :/

Sorry you didn't like the music either. I personally love it :)
