Reviews for "New Eden - Pilot"

Not to my taste, but the voices, humor and story seemed alright. The art was very well done, and I think that is what shines the most here.

However, the animation was pretty horrid. Yes, on a technical side of things, the animation was smooth and consistant, but it was also dull, lifeless and moved unrealistically. First off, take it easy with the motion blur. Every single action had an obnoxious blur; either use it more discreetly or not at all. The lip syncing was whack, it was very clearly just layered over the face independently, making it feel unnatural. Everything was also tweened or puppet-tooled, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does look cheap.

The actions the characters went through are not natural motions, it looked as though they moved just for the sake of moving instead of carrying and relating to the acting of each character. I feel that in trying to be technically perfect, you lost a feeling of realism in the characters. Everything moves far too fast and unnaturally. The body pieces you used need some variety too. Work on those things and your series here will look so much better.

The special effects looked nice though, might I add.

I'm not trying to come off as mean with my criticism, just trying to help.

Hey Tyler, thanks for taking the time to respond mate, appreciate you putting so much thought into it. All help is welcome.

Ugghh - I hate how this always happens!

Some awesome, talented individuals work their arses off and create an awesome promo for an upcoming series. It's always, slick, well-made and obviously well fueled by enthusiasm. But for some reason their always kind of... lame. I don't know why, whenever there's a big production like this, it always makes me cringe... there are examples but dammit I can't remember their names. The only exception from this is T.O.M.E. - maybe because it was based off of a series made by on person that wasn't trying to look cool or modern. And even that (I feel) is in danger of becoming boring if the characters aren't developed more.

This has the same problems - flat characters, flat jokes, and a flat storyline. But like the others, it has so much potential. Maybe the problem lies in trying too hard. trying too hard to look cool, to impress the audience, and missing the point - just go where your heart takes you - use a storyline and joke that YOU like - not ones that you think the audience will find appealing. That way it will seem less... flaccid.

Nevertheless I look forward to the upcoming shorts. I'm sorry if I've been to harsh - feel free to criticise - I hope you prove me wrong in future!

Good Luck! :)

Hey there. Thanks for taking the time to review New Eden. We always welcome input and hope you dig the shorts a bit more than the pilot.

The first short is now up. Check out 'Mating Call' and let us know what you think:

Very awkward, long, and drawn out. The comedic timing is amateurish, the voices are obnoxious, and the jokes are uninspired.

I know how it must feel when you're an animator and you take a long time drawing something and you want to leave it on the screen for as long as possible so everybody gets a good long look at it, but this really needs to be faster paced. Your 6 minute cartoon feels like it's 20 minutes. The best part was the first minute when things were happening all at once and it threw stuff in your face and didn't waste your time.

I would say the quintessential sci-fi comedy cartoon is Futurama, which is saturated with jokes. It's just funny funny funny over and over again with a gag every few seconds and no boring gaps in between. Yeah, that's hard to do. But you gotta make sure you try to throw as many gags at your audience as possible and find every opportunity to do so. And don't milk just one joke because there's a chance it was never funny in the first place. The red button thing was groan-worthy. I feel like you had maybe 2 minutes worth of quality content, so drawing it out to 6 minutes makes your audience just wanna leave.

So... make the characters charming and likable, pick up the pace, don't reuse jokes, don't draw things out, and be original and inspired.

Just wanted to say thanks for the feedback. All good solid criticism that we can use. Look forward to hearing what you think of the Shorts. Cheers!

well animated, awefully boring.
