Reviews for "Beat Universe"

Coo, but it's bit to fast!

I'm not going to lie, I really didn't like this.
I've never heard of this "osu" that everyone's talking about, but the style of the game reminded me very much of elite beat agents on DS. In fact, the way you hit notes and such were pretty much exactly the same.
I'm not saying it's a rip-off, or anything, You're perfectly welcome to make a similar game. but for the love of pete, do it a little better than this.

First of all, the loading. don't make the main game load, bring the player's hopes up and make them think they can go play now, then proceed to make them download each individual song seperately. especially when you can't turn off the menu music, because then I can't even go do something else on my computer without background music...
Another thing about the loading which annoyed me (although it might have just been my computer) was that it would occasionally glitch and skip most of the download, but when I go to play it, the song stops halfway through. This means I have to quit the game and reload it, watch another advertisement and go through the menu, then start downloading the song again. sometimes several times in a row. This was rather annoying.

But, in the end, once I finally got to playing, the experience was severely lacking. Although the graphics were quite nice (and I think they were affected by how well you were performing in the song?), and the actual choice of songs was okay, the gameplay was terrible!

Notes very rarely felt as though they were actually in sync with the song, and even then that was only when I could work out what particular beat the game wanted me to follow. it was quite annoying following a perfectly normal chain of notes, then suddenly the beat and the notes change, but the chain of notes I'm following is still going like nothing happened, causing me to lose my stride and maybe hit a few notes badly. And occasionally the notes appear to glitch and all just go right in the middle, causing a confusing mess when I try and hit them.

These problems caused me to just stop playing after the second level, because I couldn't be bothered slowly downloading each song only to find the notes are all messed up.
I might as well have just been playing a "hit these buttons in order" game, but with background music.

To be fair, when the notes were in time, and in the right place and their positioning made sense, I did have a bit of fun, and I realise the system for downloading the songs and the notes must have been quite complicated, as well as the background graphical effects, so kudos on that, I guess. But the point of a musical game such as this is to be able to hit notes in time with the music, and this game, frankly, doesn't deliver.

I set mochi to not put ads on Newgrounds, but I guess Newgrounds uses a different domain to host content.
Anyways your revew brings up some good points, some of which out of my control. I think my server is timing out for the download, in which case it should download from the backup but it doesn't for some reason. I'll look into it.
The notes stacking was a not glitch, they don't move randomly. If you try to aim to click right when the rings meet, you'll find the notes are synced quite well. Thanks for the review

Well, let's say that we're going to ignore the concept, unlike most people who like to QQ a lot, that doesn't matter to me, we have Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Call of Duty, Battlefield 3. Do I really need to go on?

Anyway, with the review side of it... The songs you've picked are actually pretty good, your timing and user friendliness with this are next to nothing. I don't even consider the beat of the songs when I'm playing, rather I just look at which one comes next and even then that can throw me off with you attempting to do an off-beat skill challenge.

Work on your timing, or leave it to the professionals.

ZEGMAN responds:

If you aim to click right when the rings meet and the note is completely white, you'll find the notes are synced quite well.

Decent concept, apparently already taken from another game but still good songs here. Big problem you have is the timing on a lot of notes. Regardless of which beat I was on, your timing for when the "notes" should be played were way early then the beat being played on them. If the timing get's reset to proper, then you'll get my five star but this is only a three. Rhythm music game has to be consistently rhythmic to what it is coinciding with.
