Reviews for "Fixation"

The Company of Myself is one of my favorite flash games, and I was very excited to see a prequel starring Katherine. (warning, spoilers)

The game-play was very interesting, I loved the smoke and lasers, they were fun even though getting the rings right is sometimes difficult. Also, the game was very apprehensive since I knew that Jack ends up killing her.

However, the ending is... iffy. I can accept that he just totally forgot about her; he's on drugs and mentioned earlier that his memory gets confused. But how did she die? Was he wrong about where the path on the right goes, or lie about it? At the end of TCoM, it seemed (to me) that he knew about what happened, but was I wrong? Does he never realize that she actually died?

The ending with Jack would have been fine... if it weren't for the fact that I want to know what happened to Katherine. That death worked for her in the first game, because it was all through his perspective. But right at the point where we lost her originally (I love the parallels in the last level btw), suddenly we switch to Jack. It's disappointing.

Remember that in the original game, it's all Jack telling a story to someone else. He doesn't recall exactly what happened that day because he was all drugged out when it happened, so instead all we get is a platformery representation of him losing her in a pit because he made an incorrect judgement call. He didn't figure out that she was gone until a little while later, but he's just telling a story in Company, so he doesn't mention that part. When this game ends, he still hasn't figured out that anything is wrong. He did NOT, however, completely forget about her: He clearly still knows about her in the original game.

Man, the ending is dark! well, you have to play "the company of myself" to get that.
Due to the psychological dialogues where everyone opens up you would expect what you see is what happens with the people in the game but after witnessing how the male character express himself in the end saying "goodbye, for now", a sentence nothing out of the ordinary, but when you already know what really happened from the other game, I get the feeling the events of this game didn't unfold the same in reality as how it happened in the head of the female character.

All in all, these two games are in my opinion the best games on newgrounds, I would however not like to see a third installment of the series where you get to see what really happened. He is a dangerous man, we get it, but please make a new game with a new story as soon as you feel like it, the amount of high-quality games inhibiting the artportal is still very scare.

FreeAsANerd responds:

Glad you enjoyed them!

You're right: All of the gameplay settings in both games are only representations of how the current player character feels about their surroundings, so no one is actually dying by falling into bottomless pits or getting burned by super lasers.

I don't have any plans for a third game in this series at this point, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I'll never do it. If I did, though, it DEFINITELY wouldn't explain the specifics of Kathryn's death: That has never been an important part of the storyline, and since Jack doesn't remember, none of us get to remember, either. The important parts are the causes (this game) and the effects (the original).

Wow, wow, and wow.

Thank you for this masterpiece. Please continue to grace the art-games world with your amazing work!

FreeAsANerd responds:

Well shit, thanks for that!

Awesome game. A really nice mix of art games and puzzle games.
Jack's ending was a little odd, I expected better for the poor guy. But All in all it was a great game.

FreeAsANerd responds:

Thanks, man!

at that starts there is just a fading light that keeps coming back. it won't let me do anything?

Try a different browser or a newer version of Flash Player, maybe.
