Reviews for "Abyss Walker"

so-so

It was a nice concept, but a few things really ruined it for me.

1 - I know the others have said this, but it seems the most important - the master's instructions, which are sometimes important scroll extremely slowly and there is no way to load them - you can only skip them altogether...

2 - stealth is not much use, it is better to just run away, it is rarely possible to get past them without get close enough that they will detect you

3 - you really should start with ninja stars or else have a block. Even killing the easy ninjas at the beginning takes ages to do without getting hit by their stars...

4 - jump is really weird, you can't change on the up, but can on the way down? change it to either can change or can't, it is very counter-intuitive.

One minute in and it was already bad.

OK, I don't deny the game is a cool concept. But it's a platformer with god awful controls. Some quick tips:

Don't have a mouse cursor for clicking on things in a game that's controlled by WASD and the arrow keys. That just doesn't work.

Hell, don't have arrow key controls. WASD is pretty much superior in every way.

When going through text, the first click should always let you read the entire thing, and then remove it. I neither want to deal with the text scrolling far slower than I read, nor skip the text, so it's an impasse.

The jump control, oh god the jump control. On the way up you're locked into one trajectory, but on the way down you have free movement. Why? Stick with one or the other; either make the jumps locked in like we're playing Ghosts and Goblins (or a number of other games) or give us air control during the entire jump, not this crazy, unintuitive hybrid.

Loved it!

The first thing that got my attention about this game was to avoid fighting and try to move without being detected, running away if necessary. It reminds me of Metal Gear series.

Later in the game, you can get your fighting skills a lot stronger, as well as your stealth skills. You can either fight every enemy or move without being detected, and running away. Or both.

What I love about it the most, as well as Metal Gear games, is the oportunity of making diferent strategies, and the oportunity of avoid enemies instead of killing.

not great

but decent. passable even. typical ninja game made by western people.
nothing special, but the animation / graphics are pretty good.
not the best game ever but good enough for what it is.
slow dialogue made me skip everything. who listens to their master anyways

Mortal Kombat?

The game itself is OK. It has some design flaws like the "I pushed a box and now I'm stuck" stuff. The Sensei takes too long to talk. The game needs a key to make all the text appear WITHOUT making it skip to the next duologue box.
As for the actual plot...This game's knowledge about ninjas seems to stem solely from Mortal Kombat. It's extremely western and reminds me of anime fangirls screaming in horribly accented Japanese(such as saying Kawaii in normal speach).
There does not seems to be any research into the subject of Ninja, Ninpo or Ninjutsu in this game so I might as well provide the answers it needs.
Sword Mastery = Kenjutsu.
Chakra is just flat out incorrect. Mana = Chakra. The weapon is called a Chakram with an "M". It's an Indian weapon, not a Japanese one.
The "spear" is actually a Kunai connected to a rope. That is not typical Ninja gear. Ninja's typically used a similar weapon called a Kusarigama. Same thing except it's a sickle instead of a kunai.
The "traps" are called Makibishi.

Also, "This skill is only available IN version on ___ website." Needs better grammar. Proofreading can vastly improve the quality of anything.

mrDN responds:

Thanks for the review, but try not be too serious about ninjas ;) Not all gamers know that Sword Mastery = Kenjutsu or what is Kusarigama or Makibishi. It's not a manual "how to become true shinobi", its just a small joke game. Have fun!
