Reviews for "Mario vs Nega Mario"

Well

On one hand this is the oldest sprite flash formula in the book.

But on the other I've seen much much worse renditions of it.

Hm...

Well, Shadowmjl,

I think you worked really hard on this..
The animation was still great, but, you should do more easing on the Virtual Camera and add more FX.
But, the idea of mixing Mario with Dragon Ball was done many times (Alvin Earthworm's Flash movies for example).
Maybe you should try something new.
So, keep animating and improving =]

Not generic, but not unique

My first thought when I saw this was "Hm, this might actually be interesting and different." Unfortunately, it wasn't quite so.

You mentioned a lot about the Scott Pilgrim game, and I expected there to be a lot more things present in the movie from the game besides what was shown. I think there could have been more uniqueness to this movie if you'd used the sound effects from the game. The entire premise is based on the "Scott vs. Nega-Scott Battle," right? So why not focus more on Scott Pilgrim-related stuff and less on the typical DBZ sound effects that are seen in almost every other Mario-fight flash movie?

With the ending of the movie, it looks like there will most definitely be a sequel. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

You do have some things going for you

Your animation is pretty good. You've got a pretty good flow at times, and the cinematography (if youd like to call it that) was good as well. However, I feel like this was a project that had a lot more potential that what it turned out to be. For example, there is a continuity issue with the falling platform near the end. I'm assuming you are using normal physics, even when falling, so how the heck do the characters stand on a falling platform on its side and not slip off? Check your animation closely and hopefully you'll catch what I mean. Another example is with the Ice Flower. That was a nice touch that you had, since it hasn't been shown off much if at all in flash animations, but you barely did anything with it (not to mention the physics on that were screwy as well).

Other than that, it did not seem that original. Also, you say in the comments how you got your inspiration from the Scott Pilgrim comic series (great comic/movie/game), but there was more DBZ references that Scott Pilgrim. It seemed more like you were another animator re-using Alvin-Earthworm's ideas, where if you focused more on the Scott Pilgrim aspect, it probably would have come across to many viewers as a lot better.

4/10 mainly for the animation, but that's really about it.

Could have been better

This could have been much better... if it wasn't exactly like every other Mario vs. Whomever game out there. The Dragon Ball-style fighting is way overused, you could have been much more imaginative with the way the characters fought. The music seemed pretty banal as well, there was nothing special about your choice in music. The story is probably what bothered me the most. I had no idea what was going on, other than some alternative Mario appeared from no where and started waging combat with the real Mario? I realize that this is based off of a comic, but you did a poor job in filling me in with what that comic was about. The lack of verbal interaction between the two Marios made the fight somewhat of a bore. The only thing I really liked was the animation, which was decent. I'm sure you'll improve with your flash animation in the future, good luck to you on that.
