Needs work.
I liked the concept, but overall I'm rather disappointed with this game. This is because it feels to me like it's trying to do too much. It has some sad story of a kid and his pet dinosaur and it seems like it's trying to make me feel sorry for both of them, and unfortunately It's impossible for me to sympathize because there are so many frustrating elements that detract from the experience. Of course it wasn't all bad though but I'll go ahead and summarize the bad stuff first.
First off, there were way too many glitches, some of them made the game easier to play, others made it significantly more difficult than it needed to be. For instance, on the level with the spiky log mentioned below, I was able to basically pull a Super Mario bros, and instead of trying to ride the dinosaur across, I just glitched through the ceiling and walked over all the hazards to the goal. However most of the glitches were just a general nuisance.
Secondly, this game would have benefited greatly from a few more checkpoints, especially on stage 20. Placing a checkpoint right after the spiky area and before the lava area would have been nice. It was very frustrating to restart the entire level over and over after completing over half of it.
Finally, as I mentioned earlier, it feels like this game is doing too much, but this is mostly between the story elements and the game play elements. I almost get the impression that I was playing some kinda art game or something and the ending was definitely not worth any of the trouble. You don't see what happens to them, and it, along with most of the game, does not make any sense. For one, what kind of crazy place does this kid live in? Spikes, lava, deformed, bloodthirsty animals? The hazards do not really fit the theme of the game at all. I'm talking about more than just realism, it's also about consistency. Like the level with the folks who were fleeing from the dinosaur because that was an element that matched with the setting and the story you're presented with at the beginning. This lack of consistency is partially why it seems like the game is trying too hard, and this is just for me, it does not seem like the elements blend together well. Had you focused more on just telling a story or on the gameplay then it would be a better game in that regard.
Now, here's the good stuff.
When I put aside all the negative things, I will say that I did like the concept of the game, I like what it's trying to do here. A platformer where you control two characters with different abilities to solve puzzles and advance further through the game. Probably nothing new, but that doesn't matter, what does matter is the way you used the idea and I did like that. The artstyle was hit or miss, I liked stage 20 for instance, the atmosphere was pretty good, even though it made the spikes harder to see. The music was ok too, although I didn't care as much for the sad songs. Felt too insistent "CRY DAMNIT!" you know?
Summary/Suggestions
While there are many obvious issues to be resolved, there is also much potential here. Perhaps you can add a riding system for the boy and the pet, and ledge grabbing as well so those barely-missed jumps aren't so frustrating. Many times I found myself wishing I could control the height of my jumps, especially on level 20. Also, you should decide on if you want to have a puzzle/adventure or a IWBTG-Esque Platformer it seemed like you tried to mix both on top of trying to have a story which only watered down the game. If you MUST add both then focus mostly on one or the other.
Anyways, with a bit more polish here and there, this game could be really good, and while I do not believe that this game is absolutely horrible, I also do not believe that this game, as it is now, deserves anything more than a 7. I look forward to a new and improved sequel and I really hope this review helps in some way.
Thanks for reading.
