Reviews for "LARRY: Doug-Out"

Good concept + Bad execution = Mediocre game

The kingdom of Karryon is coming together quite nicely, I have to admit, but quite frankly, this game suffers from FAR too many problems to be anything more than average.

The graphics are great. Everything animates smoothly and fits together well. Nothing to complain about here.

The music and sounds are good, although the beer pouring sound got annoying after a while. Maybe it's just me. Other than that, nothing to complain about in this category.

The gameplay is when this game starts to falter, badly. The game is good fun for the first few days, but after a while, Doug becomes STUPIDLY hard to beat, and McSweeny is FAR too slow; Upgraded weapons don't help at all when you can't even hit your target, do they? You could be using the most powerful weapon in the game and it still wouldn't make a difference; You can't repel Doug if you can't hit him, end of story. This is an absolutely game breaking problem and needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

My personal most frustrating problem with this game, is VERY often, when I go to serve a customer, the meter that allows me to click and pour them a drink disappears, making it impossible for me to pour a drink no matter how many times I click the mouse, and it won't come back until I walk ALL the way back into the storehouse, until McSweeny comes to a complete stop, and then walk all the way back, and even this doesn't work sometimes. It's a HUGE waste of the small amount of Doug-free time you get during the day, and one of this games biggest flaws.

Another thing that would've been nice is if you could click on McSweeny when he is carrying a barrel to make him drop it; I accidentally picked up a barrel early in the game, when you have very limited funds, and I had a full keg in front, but the only thing I could do is waste the ENTIRE barrel by pouring it into the already full barrel in the front.

All in all, this is a good idea that seems to have been COMPLETELY neglected during the testing phase; It's too flawed, unbalanced, and glitchy to be any fun, so until you fix those problems, this really isn't worth a good score.

Graphics: 10/10
Sound: 9/10
Gameplay: 2/10 (revised to an 8 if the aforementioned problems are fixed)

Overall score (not an average): 4/10, 2/5 (revised to an 8/10, 4/5 if issues are fixed)

Here's hoping you fix the problems; this could be a great game if you take care of it right.

Good art, good concept, poor mechanics. Needs update

As others have stated, the difficulty for beating the drunkard is way off, and it's basically impossible to beat him since your character will never attack fast enough (nor can you attack a barrel preemptively) to stop Doug from hiding again (even if there is only one barrel in storage). Thus late game you could never keep more than 1 barrel in storage and you had to use it before Doug came.

You could still be successful in the game, but the only trend I saw was if (late-game) I had good quality ale and undershot the mid-marker (even at the lowest point), I would make ludicrous amounts of profit while McSweeny would lament not giving his customers enough. I'm not sure if this was the intention -- to subtly characterize McSweeny as a 2-faced businessman who acts like he cares about his customers when in reality he wants to give smallest possible amount of ale in order to make the greatest profit on the margin of his supply-- if this was the case, it was very very subtly done and was basically a secret game rule.

Sidenote for other players: Whatever the case, get good quality ale, keep one barrel, and undershoot the midmarker as much as possible and you made money. This strategy only worked lategame, when - I'm guessing - your ale quality is better.

Nevertheless, the starting tip of trying to hit the mid-marker is only useful at the start of the game and gets you screwed late game, Doug's stamina and evasion are completely broken within 10 mins of the game, and the upgradeable weapon is useless as a result of aforementioned broken Doug.

The art, voice acting, and overall design are good, great even, but really for it to be a good game, the mechanics should work and be consistent enough as to not invalidate half of the game play as it progresses. If you plan on updating it, fix Doug so he is marginally beatable even by let's say day 25, and most people would be happy. Rework how McSweeny attacks so he can actually hit a barrel before Doug comes out of it and that would really help fix aforementioned problems (though the time he takes to attack and be ready for another attack still has to be less than the time it takes Doug to pop out and back in twice.)

Thanks for the work and commitment to the series, but please consider an update.

P.S.

If Doug really is supposed to be beatable as is by day 30ish or so, could you explain how the hitting Doug mechanics work a bit, like if clicking the barrel early automatically makes it so you fail or if you can only click on Doug once he pops out of the barrel?

pretty awesome

From the intro where the guy said to beat the crap outa doug to actually beating the crap outa doug i liked it. I got max upgrades, i thought it was simple. very well done.

hint: never refill the front keg from the upgrade screen, buy only one for the back and while in play refill the front with that one and you will never have to worry about doug.

Whut?

I had to try to lose to save my score, had more than 9k and could get more but i got bored -.-

If you have the highest quality and try to give the least ale as possible they pay you more o_O
So combine that with buying only 1 extra keg per day and use it before the potato guy come, you will earn 1k+ each day.

The difficulty curve is definitely off

The game ends so fast... at least much faster than is wanted, simply because the difficulty curve steepens too fast. I personally was not able to get past 2.5 star ale and the hammer. I think the drunkard shouldn't retain his resistive properties like he does now.

Fun concept.
