Reviews for "Polargeist"

Oh, geez. This song looped like three times before I noticed this was actually a loop. xD It's a very nice song, very catchy and the little bells here and there along with the piano gives it that "frosty" feeling you were going for. Piano samples are very lovely as well.

You really keep improving and improving, I really need to listen to your stuff more often. :D

Keep up the great work!

Step responds:

Heyyyy thanks for dropping by!

"Oh, geez. This song looped like three times before I noticed this was actually a loop. xD"

Haha yeah, you're not the first! I'm quite happy with the way this loops :3.

"It's a very nice song, very catchy and the little bells here and there along with the piano gives it that "frosty" feeling you were going for."

Fantastic. That and the pad that comes in at the very beginning are the two things that I think make the song sound "frosty", since everything else makes it sound like Megaman music.

"Piano samples are very lovely as well."

GIVE ME AN EAST.
GIVE ME A WEST.

*cheers*

We need to collab more often, that's what. Reset is one of the songs I've been involved in that I'm most happy with! Oh well, maybe when I don't have the free time squeezed out of me by school.

Thanks again for leaving your feedback!

I like the theme and sounds and all, maybe the genre is more video game really, which is apt considering the sawng's background. Good iciness.

There are a couple of things I don't agree with in the song, for example I think the chorusy lead from 0:55 is rather crass and I'm not a big fan of the more-basic-than-sodium-hydroxide I IV I V progression

Step responds:

I could've SWORN I already responded to this. Oh well, thanks for reviewing man, I was hoping you'd review this :3.

"I like the theme and sounds and all, maybe the genre is more video game really, which is apt considering the sawng's background. Good iciness."

Sweet. To be honest I'm not very bothered with the genre, although I just threw it under Drum'n'Bass since it just so happens to have drums and bass. Decibel says that 155 BPM isn't enough for Drum'n'Bass though.

"There are a couple of things I don't agree with in the song, for example I think the chorusy lead from 0:55 is rather crass"

You know it's pretty hard to use super saws without them sounding crude and cheesy, haha. I was out of ideas, so I just fished for a super saw in Omnisphere. It's so much easier choosing sounds in orchestral :c.

"and I'm not a big fan of the more-basic-than-sodium-hydroxide I IV I V progression"

Whoops! Well, you know me, I compose the melody first and then the chords, so it wasn't entirely intentional. Maybe it's better that way for the purposes of this track; kids will appreciate something like sodium hydroxide more than some potassium permanganate or deliquescent anhydrous iron chloride or something.

Thanks again ^_____^.

Pheew man, nothing to throw away, as always... I've started to give an ear to your work since we both published a song for Rob Lee's Wrath of cheese, and I must confess I'm each time more impressed by the quality and the genie of your prolific compositions.

I don't even know what to start with ! Sooo, let's try with what striked me the most : the bass. I always love how you develop it, and no exception this time. You really managed to make it a full voice offering a true counter melody, or playing unison with the main theme giving it a brilliant retro-touch (in my humble opinion).

I also love how you fully use all the space and play on nuances and density all along this short song. Your (kind of cliche :P) explosions on strong tenses work pretty well and contribute to the energy of the track and accentuate these different impressions produced on the listener that keep him entertained and curious. Great work on the ordering of the different voices backed up by a super solid mastering (which i'm absolutely uncapable of :D).

Excellent job on the drums also. They sound perfect and I love the breaks you propose by (that's brilliant, man) either muting them, making them ternary, or accelerating them.

Perfect choice of instrument overall, these littles bells give indeed this childish and frosty feel that you wanted to create (cause I don't really think the melody itself is particularly representative of an ice scene... but I wouldn't know how to create one myself !) and I'm sure you're friend will be fully convinced and happy with this track ! All those small ornementations such as the descents, white noise are also made with a great taste and insert themselves perfectly in this "landscape" you wanna create.

I guess I've said what I had in mind ! Sorry if the review seems a bit scolar, trying to analyse every instrument, that was not the aim. I'm just impressed by every aspect I could have notice with my little ears :)
Anyway, I've been listening to the song all the time I've been writing my review (that means quite a lot of time as I have to find my words in english, and that's not always easy) and I'm still not bored ;)

Great great job man. I know it's not your kind of music, but it's close to mine and I'd really love to hear something else in this vein from you.

Respect, young sir.

Step responds:

Wow, man. This review truly made my day; I can't thank you enough for leaving such supportive yet analytical feedback!

"I've started to give an ear to your work since we both published a song for Rob Lee's Wrath of cheese"

So that's why your username/profile pic looked familiar at first glance haha.

I can't say the same about you since I haven't heard any of your music... or at least I hadn't. I have now; damn you have catchy stuff haha.

"the bass. I always love how you develop it, and no exception this time. You really managed to make it a full voice offering a true counter melody, or playing unison with the main theme giving it a brilliant retro-touch (in my humble opinion)."

I love how you noticed that; that is precisely how I like my basslines to be. A mix of both unison and different harmonies.

"Your (kind of cliche :P) explosions on strong tenses work pretty well and contribute to the energy of the track"

Oh god yes the explosions, haha. I do agree they add a lot of energy to the track, but they are pretty generic. I can't do without them though :P. Even in my orchestral tracks I always add those massive cymbal rolls and orchestral hits and whatnot. Sometimes I think I overstate stuff too much in my music; I wish I could nail that "simple but effective" feeling that is present in so many well-composed tracks out there.

"Great work on the ordering of the different voices backed up by a super solid mastering (which i'm absolutely uncapable of :D)."

You know I actually don't have much of an idea of what I'm doing in terms of mastering and mixing. Reason being, in orchestral you really don't need much mastering and the only mixing choices I need to do usually are volume tweaking, EQing and reverb. In electronic music so much more stuff is thrown into the equation and frankly I just try and go with whatever sounds decent lol.

"Excellent job on the drums also. They sound perfect and I love the breaks you propose by (that's brilliant, man) either muting them, making them ternary, or accelerating them."

Awesome, thank you!

"Perfect choice of instrument overall, these littles bells give indeed this childish and frosty feel that you wanted to create (cause I don't really think the melody itself is particularly representative of an ice scene... but I wouldn't know how to create one myself !)"

You're incredibly perceptive, man. This is probably the third or fourth time in one review that you notice this kind of stuff haha.

I totally agree that the melody isn't all that icy, and I did indeed use the bells to cover up that fact and to make it a bit more themed towards children.

"I'm sure you're friend will be fully convinced and happy with this track !"

This is indeed the case, thankfully! The whole team are very happy with the track, which is a great relief!

"I guess I've said what I had in mind ! Sorry if the review seems a bit scolar, trying to analyse every instrument, that was not the aim. I'm just impressed by every aspect I could have notice with my little ears :)"

You have nothing to be sorry for, this review was great! I really owe you one.

"Anyway, I've been listening to the song all the time I've been writing my review (that means quite a lot of time as I have to find my words in english, and that's not always easy) and I'm still not bored ;)"

You have almost flawless English. Great to hear it didn't bore you yet because frankly I've been working on it so much that I'm practically sick of it! :P

"Great great job man. I know it's not your kind of music, but it's close to mine and I'd really love to hear something else in this vein from you."

You know, as much as this isn't my kind of music, I very much enjoyed making it. This is something I'd definitely want to try again in the future.

Anyway, I've got to say thanks again for taking your time to write such an insightful review. Like I said, it totally made my day!

This is really cool! I love how you mixed this -- there's a lot going on in the mids, but you did a great job cutting out room for each instrument to sparkle. The loop works very seamlessly, too!

I would have loved to hear something a little different at the break at 1:27. A little solo by the lead synth would be a great place to set up the reintroduction of the melody at 1:40, and add a little shape to the overall track. I like to give loops some shape (i.e a climax), and heightening the tension and anticipation going into 1:40 would be a great way to do it!

I've been meaning to get Omnisphere for a while, as I've heard a lot of praise for it over the past few years. It's great to hear such a strong real-world application of it :)

Step responds:

Great to get a review from you man, thanks for dropping by!

"This is really cool! I love how you mixed this -- there's a lot going on in the mids, but you did a great job cutting out room for each instrument to sparkle."

That's actually very relieving to hear. To be honest I secretly hate mids. Of course the mids are where the meat of a song is, so hating them isn't very healthy, but it's just so easy for the mids to get cluttered! It's why for my orchestral tracks it has become literally a habit for me to subconsciously lower the mids of a lot of the instruments I use, although I find that East/West's instruments are inherently mid-heavy anyway so good thing I do that.

"The loop works very seamlessly, too!"

You're not the first to say that; looks like I got something right! Thanks :P.

I actually had an idea really similar to that! That part at the end has a saw synth and a square synth playing at the same time, so I thought I'd have one of those playing the main melodic line, and the other playing solos on top of it. I'm not very good at harmony though, haha, I'd probably fail at that.

Great idea though, certainly something to keep in mind.

"I've been meaning to get Omnisphere for a while, as I've heard a lot of praise for it over the past few years. It's great to hear such a strong real-world application of it :)"

Thanks a million for the review! Means a lot.

And yeah I'm pretty sure it's impossible not to like Omnisphere. I love it to bits (even more than East/West, and that's saying a lot). It's an incredible plugin, I highly recommend it!

Thanks again.

Sounds cool. It loops rather well. Nice.

Step responds:

Thanks :3.
