Reviews for "Rombo"

Really fun.

But, there was an obvious issue with rotation, and enemy awareness. /An enemy would appear behind you and you wouldn't notice until he struck you. Also your rotation is to slow tto trun fast enough. This was fun, but needs improvement.

Thanks for the rating :-). You can quick-turn using the Shift key :-).

Excellent retro shooter

I found alot of nostalgia from this particular title, reminding me of pixelated shooters from the late 80s early 90s. With Wolfenstein laying down the format of killing enemies in textured mazes while searching for keys, there were a bunch of other pixelated games like this one running around fairly unknown.

Outside of the nostalgia I found the gameplay fun and the levels colorful with many textures and artifacts laying on the ground. I sometimes found alleys a little silly in the fact that nearly all the floor space had something on it but it certainly didnt detract from the game's retro look. There was a steadily increasing variety of enemies, as well as numbers. I actually underestimated this game's difficulty and got myself killed in a doorway. It was a pleasent suprise. The music is ambient with a steady upbeat to it, which while I found it ok, I didnt think it fit the game where you are fighting monsters as an apprentice. Something a little more subtle might have been better. The feature of a mute button is well appreciated by many, even though I didnt use it.

Although on that note, since the rotation is a bit on the slow side, it makes it impossible to enter some rooms without being hurt at least a few times. Something to consider revising, since I feel like that is an artificial means of increasing difficulty (ie, there is nothing the player could do to avoid it). Also on the down side, was the lack of weapon variety. The fireball is an effective weapon with a good rate of fire, but the lack of upgrades makes the combat somewhat duller. Also, there was a lack of any other sound whatsoever.

I also found the coin/gem collection mechanic to be somewhat tedious since you have to click on each jewel or coin bag (the white piles of shit with the letter C on them).

I found myself smirking at the coin bags quite a bit, because of their appearence. Reminded me of Hershey Kisses. But that was also typical of games of this sort, so it fit nicely into the overall feeling of the game.

Lastly, my final thought on the game. I liked it. Definite room for improvement but the foundation is there to really bring out some unique qualities I havent seen in a shooter in a long time, let alone flash. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Good luck on future flashes!

Thank you for your lengthy review :-). I'll try to use some more fitting music for the next game, but its hard to find good MODs these days (yes the game utilizes the good old MOD music format :-P).

Note that you can quick turn using the Shift key :-)

Great game, brings me back

This game reminds me of exploring the castle of Wolfenstein 3D. It's great fun and it is a great technical masterpiece. I can't wait to try more of your games.

badsectoracula responds:

Hey thanks. There are open areas too (like the second level) and outdoor areas with a little puzzles so there are parts which are more original :-)

Nice, Awesome Game. I love it.

I've never played anything like this on newgrounds and I think you should be Rewarded with something, Like winning an award. Things like this amaze me. You did a great job, Keep up the good work.
