Reviews for "Raider: Episode 1"

it lacks the ability to shoot upwards but its a sweet retro game

SNES Nostalgia

Totally.

10/10 but...

I don't know if i'm the only one with this problem, but the guy keeps moving on his own, and he always walks into spike pits.

You're also probably using IE...

Excellent, fantastic, etc.

To begin, I would just like to say that if you were aiming for retro flair, you certainly nailed it.

Most of what I had to say has already been said in the rather long post made...let's see...four hours ago as of this writing. I can add a few additional comments, though:

1.
There really should be a purple checkpoint before the boss. I know the game is supposed to be difficult, but after proving that I can beat the platforming segment, I do not want to have to do it over and over again after failing to beat the boss.

2.
The boss battle itself, while true to the standard retro-boss form, takes far too long after the boss changes its attack pattern. Perhaps, instead of getting only one chance to return fire per cycle, players should be able to attack twice or thrice before the boss retreats again to his/her high perch.

3.
Although I have not, at this time, beaten the game (I refuse to stoop to Beginner difficulty) I sincerely hope that these shiny baubles I've been collecting are worth more than just a score at the end of the level. If possible, it would be nice if a list or image of one's treasure hoard could appear at the end of the series (which I would assume to be level 5).

4.
There is a very, very small exploit made possible by the way you drew your spikes. If one is either extremely lucky, or extremely skilled, and lands directly next to a set of spikes whilst facing away from them, they will not take damage from the spikes. This causes a slight problem on room...er...well, it causes a problem on the room(s) that contain a single set of spikes on top of one block; players can jump on the very last pixel of the block and not take damage from spikes.

On a final note, I would like to reiterate that, except on a few small points, this game effectively captures the feel and difficulty level of old-school games, including the frustration. Fortunately, these anger-building moments make the eventual victory all the sweeter. It's not too often these days that one finds a game which can beat one in a fashion that does not involve mass amounts of enemy spam. [Insert Halo(tm) jibe here]

Fantastic throwback

Raider: Episode 1 is reminiscent of Mega Man and Castlevania, but actually a little bit better than both. The controls, sound, and graphics are perfect, and it's full of nice little touches, like being able to shoot from a ladder. 10/10 5/5
